Predicting 49ers’ 53-man roster midway through exhibitions
especially if the 49ers get cold feet on Morris.
Offensive line (9): Joe Staley, Laken Tomlinson, Weston Richburg, Mike Person, Mike Mcglinchey, Joshua Garnett, Jonathan Cooper, Garry Gilliam, Erik Magnuson. Extra point: Right guard is STILL in flux so Garnett or Cooper could overtake Person. Magnuson could miss up to two months with a hamstring injury and may be worth carrying on roster for short-term IR, otherwise keep aboard Pace Murphy or Darrell Williams.
Defensive line (9): Deforest Buckner, Solomon Thomas, Arik Armstead, Earl Mitchell, Cassius Marsh, Sheldon Day, Jullian Taylor, Jeremiah Attaochu, D.J. Jones. Extra point: It seems silly to carry so many interior linemen and one could go if a pass rusher makes a late arrival (realistically, think Elvis Dumervil than Khalil Mack).
Linebackers (6): Brock Coyle, Malcolm Smith, Eli Harold, Fred Warner, Dekoda Watson, Mark Nzeocha. Extra point: Reuben Foster is suspended the first two games, so perhaps Korey Toomer or Elijah Lee stay employed. Pita Taomoepenu is still a project, perhaps better suited for the practice squad.
Defensive backs (10): Richard Sherman (CB), Ahkello Witherspoon (CB), Adrian Colbert (FS), Jaquiski Tartt (SS), K’waun Williams (NB), Jimmie Ward, Greg Mabin, Tarvarius Moore, D.J. Reed Jr., Chanceller James. Extra point: Sherman looks on track for Week 1. Is Mabin a better backup option (or special teammer) than Tyvis Powell or Tarvarus Mcfadden?
Specialists (3): Robbie Gould (K), Bradley Pinion (P), Kyle Nelson (LS). Extra point: This trifecta works well together, so the only debate is whether lefty Jeff Locke unseats Pinion.
Injured reserve: Safety Terrell Williams, possibly running back Joe Williams (and Erik Magnuson, as noted).
Non-football-injury list: Defensive end Kentavius Street.
