River Valley sweeps Mcclatchy in opener

Colusa cruises past Anderson to move to 4-0

River Valley High’s volleyball team got its season off to a strong start on Wednesday night by cruising to an easy three-set sweep of Mcclatchy High in Sacramento.

Junior outside hitter Jaclyn Ruiz finished with a team-high eight kills, and senior middle hitter Sophia Alley recorded seven kills and three blocks to lead the way at the net for the Falcons, who won the match by game scores of 25-15, 25-11 and 25-19.

Senior setter Samee Taylor helped the cause by spiking four kills and handing out 14 assists, while senior libero Alexis Topete made eight digs. River Valley also got a lift from junior middle blocker Mackenzie Van Valkenburg­h, who chipped in with three kills and two blocks in the victory.

“I definitely have high hopes for this team. We’re moving into a tough league and the competitor­s will be top notch. It’s nervewrack­ing, but it’s also exciting at the same time,” said River Valley coach Grayson Agpawa.“the girls play well together and our offense is really strong. We can hit from either side of the pin, the middle and the back.”

The Falcons (1-0) take on Elk Grove tonight in their home opener.

Colusa 3, Anderson 0 In Anderson – The Redhawks posted their fourth straight victory to open the year by sweeping past the Cubs on the road.

Annie Lay turned in another strong match with 26 assists, 18 service points and three aces, and Jessica Hickel finished with 11 kills and six digs as Colusa won by game scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-10.

Hannah Taylor added six kills and two blocks at the net, Abby Huskey made nine digs and Gracie Myers had eight digs to round out the leaders.

After playing two straight days on the road, the Redhawks (4-0) return home to face Oroville tonight.

Colusa also won the JV contest, 25-6, 25-10.
