Alleged funeral stabber charged with attempted murder

A man accused of stabbing a Yuba City funeral attendee in July faces a new charge of attempted murder.

Yuba City police responded to the Ullrey Memorial Chapel on Almond Street July 1 to reports of a man stabbed in the back by an acquaintance. Police found the suspect – Chain Singh Khera, 76, of Nelson – in a large group of people still at the chapel. No one else was injured, and the victim suffered non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Khera was originally charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon, but in Sutter County Superior Court on Wednesday, the District Attorney’s Office amended the complaint to include attempted murder. Khera’s attorney, Mani Sidhu, argued against it, saying the facts of the case don’t justify the charge.

Judge Brian Aronson disagreed and allowed the amended complaint.

In a text message Wednesday, Sidhu said Khera allegedly stabbed the man once in the lower back with a small kitchen knife with no evidence of intent to kill, which is required for a conviction for an attempted murder charge.

Khera is scheduled to next appear Oct. 24. Main number .................... Steve Miller ...................... Andrew Cummins .............
