Yuba volleyball drops BVC opener

After picking up its first win of the season in San Bernardino over the weekend, Yuba College’s volleyball team opened its Bay Valley Conference slate with a four-set loss to Los Medanos on Wednesday night in Pittsburgh.

Heather Harness finished the match with a team-high 10 kills to go with four blocks and six digs for the 49ers, who lost by game scores of 25-21, 25-19, 21-25 and 25-17.

Jasmine Pamma handed out 16 assists and had two kills and a pair of digs, and Connar Lopez served for six aces while making five digs to round out the leaders for Yuba.

The 49ers (1-7, 0-1 BVC) continue conference play on Friday night at home against the College of Alameda.

HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY Duncan, Moore-mckelvy take 1st In Wheatland – Wheatland’s CJ Duncan and Talia Mooremckel­vy both placed first in their respective divisions at the five-team Wheatland Invitation­al at Camp Far West on Wednesday.

Duncan, a state qualifier in both cross country and in track and field over the past two years, finished the 3.2-mile course in a time of 19 minutes, 2 seconds to win the varsity boys race. Mooremckel­vy won the varsity girls race in a time of 25:18.

Raven Skousen also took fourth in the varsity boys race in 21:07 for the Pirates.

Gridley’s Damian Mendoza medaled with a third-place finish in 21.04 and teammate Daniel Perez took 12th in 25.01.

In the combined boys-girls junior varsity race, Gridley’s Efren Aguilar took first by covering the 2.1-mile course in 17.02. Wheatland’s Makayla Thompson took first for girls and second overall with a time of 17:11.
