Yuba Sutter Mall to host annual Day of the Dead celebratio­n

Yuba Sutter Mall will host an annual celebratio­n to wake the dead... figurative­ly speaking.

The fourth annual Dia de los Muertos Celebratio­n at the Yuba Sutter Mall is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 28. at 1215 Colusa Ave., Yuba City.

“The holiday has become a part of our popular culture through the whimsical skeleton figures and other art work along with films like “Coco” and “The Book of Life.” Day of the Dead is celebrated throughout Mexico and is acknowledg­ed around the world in other cultures,” according to a press release from Yuba Sutter Arts. The organizati­on hosted its own celebratio­n Saturday. “The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends who pray for and remember friends and family members who have passed, and to help support their spiritual journey.”

Halloween, but is quite different. Day of the Dead is essentiall­y a family time, a time of reunion for both the living and the dead.

There are many traditions related to the Day of the Dead. The flower most commonly associated with the holiday is the marigold which is thought to attract souls of the dead 2 p.m. Call 751-1100 or email info@actingcomp­any.org.

to the offerings. Traditiona­lly, toys are brought for children who have passed. Families also offer trinkets or the deceased’s favorite candies. Altars are also created in homes, usually with foods such as candied pumpkin and sugar skulls. The offerings are left out in the homes as a welcoming gesture for the deceased.
