No Garoppolo type deal for 49ers
SANTA CLARA – A year after acquiring Jimmy Garoppolo, the flailing 49ers maintained status quo Tuesday at this season’s trade deadline.
Pierre Garçon did not get dealt after coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged brokering him this week on a receiver-needy market. Tuesday’s deadline deals saw two wide receivers find new homes: Golden Tate (Detroit Lions to Philadelphia Eagles) and Demaryius Thomas (Denver Broncos to Houston Texans).
Garçon didn’t play in Sunday’s loss at Arizona and Shanahan expects him back for Thursday’s game against the Raiders, especially now that he didn’t get traded.
“I’m excited about that. Pierre’s excited about that,” Shanahan said. “He’s still limited today but I’d be surprised if he can’t make it on Thursday.”
Tate cost the Eagles a third-round pick, while the Texans coughed up a fourth-rounder and exchanged seventh-round selections.
The 49ers did trim one wide receiver Tuesday from their seven-man corps: Victor Bolden Jr., who was waived along with cornerback Greg Mabin. Those roster spots could be earmarked for safety Marcell Harris and outside linebacker Dekoda Watson as they look poised to come off the injured reserve list.
The 49ers’ remaining wide receivers: Garçon, Marquise Goodwin, Trent Taylor, Kendrick Bourne, Dante Pettis, Victor Bolden Jr. and Richie James Jr; the 49ers also have two on the practice squad: Aaron Burbridge and Steven Dunbar.
None rank among the league’s top 100 receivers for yards, and Garçon checks in 93rd with 21 receptions (230 yards). Tight end George Kittle leads the 49ers with 37 catches for 584 yards, while Goodwin has a team-high four touchdown receptions.
Defensive back Jimmie Ward was listed as another potential 49er on the market, Sports Illustrated reported Sunday. But the 49ers can ill afford to lose a safety, which is where Ward returned last game after lining up at cornerback all year. Antone Exum (concussion) is out Thursday and Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder) may not play either.
The 49ers (1-7) have lost six straight heading into Thursday’s home game against the Raiders (1-6).
