Wheatland, River Valley are girls basketball champions

The Falcons defended their championsh­ip title in the Merced Tournament on Saturday night when they defeated the hosting Bears 49-41.

Sareen Lally had 17 points, six, rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block on the night.

Harleen Mattu had eight points, seven rebounds, one block and one steal in the win.

Tinoco was named MVP, while Lally and Lee made All-tourney.

Despite the loss, the team was lead by Aubrey Fowler with 16 points and 15 rebounds, while her teammate Macie Purbaugh scored 12 and had seven steals and Reagan Ford had nine points and 14 rebounds.

On Saturday they played against hosting Colusa.

Colusa 50, Sutter 46 In Colusa – The Redhawks staged a fourth quarter rally to overtake the Huskies in a battle for third place at Jim Ernst Tournament.

Annie Lay tied the game with an assist from Edith Moreno then hit Gillian Ayala for the go ahead bucket with five minutes remaining in the game.

In the final minute Moreno, who had a team high 13 points, hit four straight free throws

to close out the game. Lay added an additional 12 for the Redhawks. Macie Purbaugh led Sutter with 13 points, while Aubrey Fowler pitched in with nine.

Both Moreno and Fowler were All-tournament selections.

Gridley 56, Chico 44 In Gridley – A continued winning streak for the hosts of the Lady Bulldogs Holiday Classic showed up during Friday night’s win over the Panthers.

Maddyson Tull had a double-double with 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Kennedy Tull had 21 points.

Teammates Zaira Bandilla and Emma Little added four and three points respective­ly.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs took on Willows to conclude the tournament play, falling to the Honkers 54-34.

Coach Beccas Mccray said it was a tough battle with only having six players. Kennedy Tull had 15 points on the game. Maddyson Tull had 11 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots.

Gridley travels to Olivehurst to take on Lindhurst on Tuesday.

Faith Christian 21, Stockton Christian 49 In Yuba City – The Lions had another tough night on Saturday against the Eagles.

Despite the loss, Roxy Rodriguez pulled in 14 points and Angelina Ekdawy had nine rebounds, to conclude the Faith Christian Holiday Classic.

Avery Johns was named to the All-tourney team at the conclusion of the game.

Faith Christian (0-4) faces Highlands on Wednesday.

New Life Christian 33,

Esparto 42 In Yuba City – The Crusaders fell to Esparto after a long fought game on Saturday afternoon.

Haley Rogers pulled in 14 points and Courtney Hruska had 11. Hruska also recieved an All-tourney honors. New Life Christian (2-2) takes on Paradise Adventist on Tuesday in Chico.

East Nicolaus 36, Mercy 31 In Biggs – The Spartans won the consolatio­n title at Biggs Tournament on Saturday night.

Hannah O’connor led the team with 10 points and six rebounds.

Natalie Butler had eight points and Tiara Ceasar seven, four blocks and was named to the All-tourney team. East Nicolaus (2-2) next game is at Wheatland. The junior varsity Spartans defeated the hosting Biggs team 38, 20 giving them the championsh­ip title.

Brynn Lauppe had 14 points, seven steals and was named to All Tourney in team on Saturday night.

Taylor Rocucci had 13 points, eight steals and was named MVP of Tournament.

The junior Spartans (4-0) next game is at Wheatland.

Boys Basketball Marysville 72, Red Bluff 71 In Wheatland – The Indians clutched their victory over the Spartans in the final seconds of the game on Saturday.

Blake Clavelle scored 16 points, two of which were the game winning free throws that game Marysville the lead with 1.3 seconds left in the game. Clavelle also had five assists. Leading the team was Illyaas Rafiq with 19 points. Nate Webb also scored high with 17 points and seven rebounds.

Marysville (3-0) hosts Portervill­e on Tuesday.

Faith Christian 87, Stockon Christian 91 OT

In Yuba City – The Lions couldn’t hang on in overtime and lost the title to the Eagles, but took second place in the Faith Christian Holiday Classic on Saturday.

It was a high scoring game with multiple players in double digits.

Nikko Rodriguez had 31 points, and Ben George had 22.

Both Daniel Wickline and Tye Morrison had double-doubles. Morrison had 17 points and rebounds a piece. Wickline had 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Lions (2-2) play their next game a week from Tuesday on Dec. 11.

Williams 59, Dixon 56 In Arbuckle – For the second game in a row the Yellowjack­ets saw the final outcome come down to the last seconds, but on Friday they were able to hold on and claim third place at the 52nd annual Pierce Tournament.

Senior Anthony Davalos led the way with a 21 point effort, but got plenty of help from Mo Hernandez who added 15 including two last second free throws to ice the game.

Danny Hernandez also had a double digit game dropping in 11 points, while Hunter Povlsen was named to the all-tournament team.

Williams (3-1) next plays on Monday against Princeton.

Pierce 70, Middletown 30 In Arbuckle – For the first time since 1992, the Bears are the champions of their home tournament as they won in blowout fashion over the Middletown Mustangs in the title game.

Justin Matthews had the hot hand pouring in 27 points which included a streak of five straight shots to break the game wide open in the first quarter, and from there the Bears never looked back.

Tournament MVP Jonathan Corchado finished with 14 points and impressed with his all-around unselfish effort.

Daniel Medina added 13 points for Pierce who saw Luke Voorhees earn all-tournament honors with his tough play in the paint.

Unbeaten in the preseason to this point, the Bears (4-0) resume play next Thursday at the Buck Bailey Tournament in Woodland.

Wheatland 49, Lincoln 62 In Wheatland – The Pirates had a tough night against the Fighting Zebras on Saturday night in the concluding game of the Wheatland Tournament.

Wheatland took third place overall for the tournament.

Despite the loss, coach Scott Rounds said the season is off to a good start with the two wins they have so far, because they had a combined six wins in the previous two seasons.

Sophomore Tanner Mcadams had 17 points, 10 rebounds and was named All-tourney.

Brevin Brown also was named All-tourney and had nine points, five assists, five rebounds and four steals.

Wheatland’s (2-1) next game is at East Nicolaus on Tuesday.

River Valley 53, Casa Grande 48 In Mckinleyvi­lle – The Falcons defeated the Gauchos (Petaluma) to take third in the Mckinleyvi­lle Tournament on Saturday.

Dante Montgomery scored 25 points, Sahib Sharma had 12 and five rebounds and Puneet Bains had seven points and rebounds each, and three assists.

River Valley (2-1) heads up to Chico on Tuesday to take on Pleasant Valley at 7 p.m.

Gridley 72, Durham 37 In Durham – The Bulldogs beat host Durham Friday night in the Herb Jergentz Tournament, giving them another win on the season.

Grant Tull scored 22 points, Javir Rodriquez had 11 and Cameron Erickson made nine.

Gridley played Central Valley on Saturday, defeating them 53-48.

Tull scored 16 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals on the night.

Wyatt Dreesman had 13 points and six rebounds and Rodrigez scored 11 points, four rebounds. Gridley is now 2-2 overall. Boys Freshman Basketball River Valley 47, Antelope 46 In Center – The freshman Falcons defeated the Titans to claim the consolatio­n championsh­ip title in the Center High Tournament on Saturday. River Valley went 2-1 on the tournament. Colin Totmann had 11 points, scoring the last few points that gave the Falcons the lead and sealed their victory.

Coach Brad Mcintyre said they held off Antelope after Totmann’s points were scored.

Brady Chipchase and Suk Judge both had 10 points.

Totmann earned All-tourney honors at the conclusion of the tournament.

The Falcons play Pleasant Valley on Tuesday in Chico.

Marysville 47, Gridley 57 In Las Plumas – The freshman Indians played a game in the last round of the Las Plumas Tournament against the Bulldogs, but were unable to come out with a win, placing fourth overall.

Jaxon Finley was high scorer with 11 points and Jesus Reyes finished the game with 10.

Marysville (2-2) plays against Oroville on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Girls Soccer Marysville went 1-1 in Feather River Tourney

The Indians saw a day similar to Friday’s outcome as they as concluded the Feather River Varsity Girls Soccer Tournament.

In the first game against Yreka, the Indians scored three goals to their one to claim a victory and move them to the next match.

Amelia Adamson, Caroline Matthews and Bryseida Comalinga scored the goals in the game, with assists from Leslie Velazquez and Anastacia Bancroft.

In the second game, it was a defensive battle against Red Bluff which resulted in a 0-0 tie at the end of the game.

After the penalty kicks, Red Bluff came out victorious.

That doesn’t discount goal keeper Kaile De los Santos’ seven saves during the game. Marysville hosts Live Oak on Tuesday.

Wrestling East Nicolaus Two varsity boys placed in the top ten at the Vista del Lago varsity tourney on Saturday.

Zach Mclenna finished sixth at 182 and Julian Lizardo took seventh at 120.

Four wrestlers placed in the top three at Yuba City on Saturday.

Varsity girls Leona Lizardo took second and Thais Chan placed third at 111. Bella Caputo took second at 138. Varsity boy Marcus Loscher took second at 145. The Spartans next competitio­n is at River Valley for the Battle of the Buttes on Friday.

Sutter In Yuba City – The Huskies saw three first place wins in the Panu Classic on Saturday.

The three junior varsity boys that placed first are Jeffery Rosales at 113, D’angelo Acosta at 126 and Ulisses Alverez in heavy weight. Logan Carreira took third at 113. Varsity girl Elizabeth Ramirez took third at 131. Sutter varsity’s next competitio­n is in Elk Grove at the Curt Mettler varsity meet on Saturday.

Junior varsity will compete at River Valley on Saturday.

River Valley In Yuba City – The Falcons saw four first place wins in the Panu Classic on Saturday.

The four first place boys are Brendan Longren at 106, Edward Rodriguez at 120, Jose Salazar at 126 and Richard Henderson at 160. Five wrestlers place third in their weight classes. Susan Yang at 106 and Natalee Goode at 126 were the two girls that placed third.

Izaak Dumaron at 182, Jaylin Williams at 195 and Josh Colburn at 220 also took third in their respective­ly weight classes.

Liam Smith also took fourth at 120.
