Suspect shot by deputies ID’D as transient
Dead man allegedly beat 70-year-old and stole his cane
The finest fabric, most intricate hair style and only the most exquisite jewels are what Marysville socialite Mary Aaron was wearing in her wedding portrait, taken in 1874. The original portrait can be found inside Mary Aaron Memorial Museum in Marysville. ... The man shot and killed after a confrontation with deputies in Linda on Monday has been identified as 45-year-old Jahmal D. Stewart.
Stewart was reported to be a transient in the Marysville area, according to a Yuba County Sheriff’s Office press release Tuesday afternoon.
According to the news release, a 911 call on the case was initially reported as an assault with a weapon. It was then determined that the incident was a robbery, and the victim was a man in his 70s. Stewart allegedly attacked and beat the man and then stole his cane.
The victim did not know Stewart and the attack appeared to have been random, according to the release.
Two Yuba County deputies responded to the 911 call in front of the Super X Market in the 1400 block of North Beale Road around 3:30 p.m. and attempted to make contact with Stewart, who matched the description of the suspect, Sheriff Wendell Anderson told the Appeal-democrat on Monday.
A confrontation with the deputies took place around 150 yards
from the market, between a hookah lounge and the VIP Car Wash near Avondale Avenue.
Stewart was shot multiple times and was reported dead at the scene. One deputy suffered injuries related to the confrontation, but was not shot and declined medical aid.
It was not reported what happened during the confrontation that led to shots being fired.
The state Department of Justice arrived Monday evening to process the scene. The two Yuba County deputies are on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the officer-involved shooting investigation. When asked if Stewart was armed with any weapons or had the walking cane on him when he died, department spokeswoman Leslie Carbah said those details are under investigation.
“Once all the OIS investigative interviews are complete, we will hopefully be able to fill in those blanks,” Carbah wrote in an email Tuesday. “But they are actively interviewing involved parties and witnesses and can’t release any further information until that process is completed.”
The robbery victim received medical care, but his condition was not known Tuesday.
