Rich Scangarello interviews with Broncos
Perhaps 49ers general manager John Lynch and his Denver counterpart, John Elway, worked out an agreement?
On Monday, 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello was scheduled to interview for the Broncos’ offensive-coordinator opening, 9News in Denver reported. On Friday, the 49ers reportedly had denied Denver permission to speak with Scangarello.
The 49ers have denied multiple teams permission to interview offensive assistants Mike Mcdaniel and Mike Lafleur.
It’s not known whether Lynch’s connection with Elway played a role in Scangarello’s interview. They are close friends, and Elway was instrumental in Lynch’s decision to leave his job as a Fox analyst to become the 49ers’ GM in 2017.
Scangarello has just four seasons of NFL coaching experience and has worked as an offensive coordinator only at small colleges (Wagner, Northern Arizona, Millsaps and UC Davis). However, his performance in his two seasons with the 49ers has been notable for his work with quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo and Nick Mullens.
Cold in Kansas City: The National Weather Service is projecting an arctic blast to settle over Kansas City for the Chiefs’ game against the Patriots on Sunday. Temperatures at kickoff could range from 10 degrees to well below zero, potentially making it the coldest game in Arrowhead Stadium history.
Both teams are accustomed to cold, inclement weather, though. Heavy snow blanketed Kansas City but stopped just before kickoff of the Chiefs’ win over the Colts on Saturday. The wind chill was in the teens for New England’s win over the Chargers on Sunday.
Coaching changes: The Vikings hired Gary Kubiak as an assistant head coach and offensive adviser. Kubiak spent the past two seasons as a senior personnel adviser with the Broncos after stepping down as their head coach because of health concerns. Minnesota head coach Mike Zimmer picked Kevin Stefanski to be his offensive coordinator . ... Mike Munchak, who had been a finalist for Denver’s head-coaching job, is making a lateral move from the Steelers to serve as the Broncos’ offensive line coach. The Steelers promoted Shaun Sarrett to replace Munchak . ... Though Cleveland head coach Freddie Kitchens said he would continue to call plays, he hired a coordinator, Tampa Bay’s Todd Monken, to oversee his offense.
