AAUW is a national organization dedicated to promoting equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.
On Thursday Feb. 21 the local chapter, Iota Sigma, of Delta Kappa Gamma International held a special dinner meeting in Yuba City at Boyd Hall.
The chapter members and guests, enjoyed dinner, an induction of two new members, and a slide show presentation by Jill Dettmer, a NASA specialist. The DKG is an international society of exceptional women educators, said Penny Fredell, local president.
It is a significant honor to be a member of this group. As a DKG Chapter, we attend Bright Future Health Fairs, giving age appropriate books to all children who attend with their parents. We also provide baby literacy kits to young mothers with the goal of fostering the notion of reading to your newborn as well as in their early years. The books are purchased with funds generously given to us by the local Kiwanis Club.
We also create “Jared Boxes,” which we then take to Shriner’s Hospital in Sacramento. These boxes provide hours of fun activities for bed-bound children. Our monthly meetings always feature an educational as well as entertaining subject. Jill Dettmer, who worked with NASA for her entire career, was a dynamic speaker. She was on a first name basis with all the astronauts and gave us first hand knowledge about the ins and the outs, the happy and the sad events that were highlights during her many years of service. Thank you Jill for a job well done.
