Hearing to decide if roosters will be euthanized
25 roosters seized when officers responded to report of cockfighting ring in January
A court hearing next Monday will determine whether or not Sutter Animal Services Authority can euthanize or adopt out 25 fighting roosters in its care since January.
The roosters were seized Jan. 27 when Sutter County sheriff’s deputies and an animal services officer responded to a report of a cockfighting ring in the 2100 block of Everglade Road – a rural area in south Sutter County with an ag business surrounded by orchards. Around 20 people ran away once deputies arrived, according to Appeal-democrat archives, but five people were detained with three arrested.
The roosters were seen by a veterinarian and were in good health. But the birds have to be kept out of sight of each other and have to be fed and cleaned individually due to aggressive behavior.
Several pieces of equipment associated with cockfighting were also seized, according to the civil petition published in the Appeal-democrat, including gaffs (sticks with a hooked or barbed spear), gaff holders, wax string (used to attach a slasher blade to a rooster’s leg prior to a fight),
