Another horse dies at Santa Anita Park
On the heels of a deadly winter/ spring racing season, yet another horse has died at Santa Anita Park in California.
Satchel Paige, a 3-year-old gelding, was put down Saturday after fracturing his left front ankle during a race, officials said.
“Satchel Paige will undergo a necropsy at the University of California-davis’ School of Veterinary Medicine on behalf of the California Horse Racing Board, as is mandatory for all on-track accidents,” Dr. Dionne Benson, chief veterinarian for the Stronach Group, said in a statement.
“The accident and the necropsy report will be reviewed to learn what, if anything, could have been done to prevent the accident. Santa Anita will work closely with the CHRB to investigate this accident and will continue to brief our stakeholders and all of our constituents, including the public, as more facts come in.”
The death month after comes less than a Emtech, a 3-yearold gelding, was euthanized after breaking both front legs during a Sept. 28 race at Santa Anita.
Before Satchel, 33 horses had died at Santa Anita since December in a troubling pattern that shut the racetrack down for three weeks while officials tried to install safety precautions and changed over several management positions.
RON BURKLE: REPUBLIC FC WILL WIN
Burkle said he and his group are in it to win, as he is in Pittsburgh, where his team has won three championships.
“We’re either going to win, or get caught trying,” he said.
He and his investment partners studied both Sacramento and Major League
Soccer and decided the effort makes good sense financially long term. But it’s also satisfying on a personal level to have an experience that even his grandchildren can enjoy. “For my older kids having the hockey team was a really exciting part of life. The little guys and my grand kids will all be soccer players, I’m sure.”
