Paper Mache
Do you remember that favorite teacher from long ago who made a major impact on your life?
Mine was my high school drama and Shakespeare teacher. I’ll never forget our classroom readings of the great tragedies even though she kept all the big juicy title roles for herself! Mrs. Shutes was about 5’ tall but mighty in stature.
Her rendition of King Lear is still among my favorites. She instilled in me a love of theater that has been a constant in my life and helped me gain the confidence to get on stage in front of an audience of strangers. And so began my life in sales and marketing!
It is with those special arts teachers in mind that we recognize National Arts in Education Week. The celebration is designated to show support for equitable access to the arts for all students. We like to show our gratitude each year to the fine arts teachers, music and theater arts teachers and English teachers who support our programs including Poetry Out Loud and the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture is proud of its Arts in Education portfolio, none of which would be possible without the encouragement of our teachers. We offer programs to broaden the availability of art experiences for students. For example, we just issued a casting call for our upcoming virtual musical, “Super Happy Awesome News!” There are 20 parts for 7-14 year olds of all skill levels. Details can be found at yubasutterarts.org.
Here is a partial list of other local organizations that offer arts programs for students of all ages.

The world should know that arts education is vital in shaping human potential and that our arts educators are the key to this important work, especially during these uncertain times.
