Carr-to-ruggs miracle delivers Raiders win over winless Jets

- By Jerry Mcdonald Mercury News (TNS)

The Raiders saved their season Sunday when Derek Carr hit Henry Ruggs III for a 46-yard touchdown pass with five seconds to play for a 31-28 win over the New York Jets.

The Jets came in with an 0-11 record and had overcome a 24-13 deficit to lead 28-24.

The Raiders are 7-5, while the Jets fall to 0-12.

The Raiders scored on touchdown passes of 9 and 38 yards from Carr to Darren Waller, a 2-yard run by Carr and a 48-yard field goal by Daniel Carlson.

Darnold threw 3 and 6-yard touchdown passes to Jamison Crowder and ran for a 4-yard run. Ty Johnson’s 1-yard run put the Jets up 28-24 with 5:34 to play.

Waller caught 13 passes for 200 yards and the two touchdowns.

The Raiders got the ball back one last time with 35 seconds to play but Carr missed Nelson Agholor on a deep throw with 19 seconds left on a potential 54-yard score.

Highs, lows and all you need to know: — Smash-mouth Jets: The Jets basically ran the ball down the Raiders throats enroute to a 96-yard, nine-play drive that resulted in Darnold’s 4-yard run over Jeff Heath. A two-point conversion pass from Darnold to Mims cut the score to 24-21 with 10:22 left.

The two-point pass came after an incompletion was erased by a Nick Morrow pass interference call in the end zone.

At the conclusion of the drive, the Jets had 190 yards rushing.

Ruggs’ big fumble: Rookie wide receiver Henry Ruggs

III coughed up a first-down completion from Carr to set up the Jets for the lead score.

The recovery gave the Jets an opportunity for a shortfield drive, and they drove 44 yards in six plays to score on Johnson’s 1-yard run.

— Re-introducing the run: After an eight-run, 26 pass first half, the Raiders opened the second half with a 13-play, 75yard drive that included nine running plays and concluded with Carr’s 2-yard scramble around right end for a 24-13 lead.

The Raiders ran the ball nine times for 38 yards — one more run than in the first 20 minutes. Booker had 31 yards on six carries — including a 14-yard run on the opening play of the drive.

— Sad sacks: With the Raiders in position to score again before halftime with their third takeaway, Carr was sacked on consecutive plays to end the half with a 17-13 lead.

Clelin Ferrell’s second strip sack, this one recovered by Maxx Crosby, gave the Raiders the ball at the 40-yard line.

After an 18-yard pass to Hunter Renfrow and an incomplete pass to Nelson Agholor, linebacker Neville Hewitt and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams sacked Carr on back-to-back plays.

— Mullen island: Trayvon Mullen jumped a pass route from Darnold to Perriman

for an interception that set up the Raiders’ lead score, a 38yard touchdown from Carr to Waller.

It put the Raiders up 1713 with 1:12 left in the half. Waller, who last had a 100-yard receiving game in Week 2, had eight catches for 123 yards in the half. The score came on a simple hitch play where Waller spun out of a tackle and ran down the right sideline for the score.

— Ferrell’s strip sack: Defensive end Clelin Ferrell had a strip sack of Darnold which was recovered by Johnathan Hankins at the

Jets’ 31-yard line. The Raiders gained exactly one yard before Carlson kicked a 48-yard field goal to make it 13-10 with 6:07 left in the half.

— Two’s a Crowder: The Jets countered the Raiders’ first score with a 69-yard, sevenplay drive with Darnold hitting Crowder for six yards and the touchdown with 12:02 left in the half.

Josh Adams gashed the Raiders defense with a 25-yard run on the drive, with Erik Harris missing a tackle. Sergio Castillo missed the extra point for the Jets.

Lamarcus Joyner left with a foot injury on the play preceding the touchdown and was replaced by Amik Robertson.

— Waller world: The Raiders tied the score 7-7 in the final moments of the first quarter on Carr’s 9-yard touchdown. The Jets were mystified in how to defend Waller at that point, as he caught seven passes for 79 yards in the quarter.

The scoring drive covered 79 yards in seven plays, and also included a 28-yard pass to Ruggs, who had the ball glance off his hands for an interception on the Raiders’ opening

possession.

— Ugly start: The Raiders lost cornerback Damon Arnette following a head-on collision on the first play, then proceeded to give up a 74-yard, 12-play drive for a touchdown.

Darnold was 4 of 6 for 53 yards and the payoff came on a 3-yard scoring pass to Crowder. Darnold had completions of 22 yards to Breshad Perriman and

17 yards to Denzel Mims.

The Raiders first offensive possession resulted in an interception when a high Carr pass glanced off the hands of Ruggs and went directly to Arthur Maulet. Maulet ran the interception back 20 yards but the Raiders’ defense forced a three-and-out.

— Mariota suits up: Marcus Mariota, signed in the off

season to a two-year contract that pays him $7.5 million in salary and counts $9 million against the salary cap, was active for the first time in front of Nathan Peterman as Carr’s backup.

Mariota has been inactive as the No. 3 quarterback for the past five games after coming off injured reserve following a pectoral injury.
