Paper Mache
Have you heard? “Hamilton” is coming to town! Well, not literally our town, but to Sacramento. It’s the blockbuster musical that helped reinvent Broadway when it opened in 2015 and put Lin-manuel Miranda on the map as a force to be reckoned with in theatrical circles. The show is a retelling of the early days of our Republic to a hip hop, R&B, pop and soul music beat, and it closes with a thoughtful reflection on historical memory. It helped build careers for many in the original cast. If you are interested, better try to buy your tickets sooner rather than later as it will likely be a sell out like it was in San Francisco a few years back.
Closer to home, rumors abound about a water-born production of Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors” this summer. The play is an early work featuring two sets of identical twins, to be performed at Gauche Aquatic Park. Yes, that is where the term “comedy of errors” originated. Slapstick and mistaken identity abound in the play in addition to puns and word play. We expect nothing less than some Esther Williamsstyle synchronized ballets worked into the show. So maybe we are getting back to some sort of normal outdoor entertainment like music in the park or Shakespeare in the pool but bring your umbrella for this one!
And our friends at the Acting Company have arisen with a bold, virtual production of “Puffs,” a not so closely veiled parody of the world of Harry Potter with the B team or underdogs sharing their experiences at the school of magic and wizardry. A fun aspect of the production is the appearance in various cameo roles by elected officials and other community leaders from Brownsville to East Nicolaus.
