Harold Joseph Schwall was born i n Nicolaus, California on April 11, 1930 to Josephine Adelia and Albert Joseph Schwall.

He was born and raised on the family farm and graduated from East Nicolaus High School in 1948. He lived his entire life in his hometown of Nicolaus with the exception of a couple years serving in the US Army assigned as a medic to the United Nations North Korean Prisoner of War camp in Koje Do. Although his time in Korea was only a small portion of his 91 years, his experiences impacted the rest of his life. Growing up on the family farm, the farm always came first for him and his brother, and school was second. So for his own children, he was committed to make sure that education always came first.

Harold married Betty Ann Borg on January 10, 1954 and celebrated 58 years of marriage before her passing i n 2012. He supported his family of 9 with a very limited education and always found ways to make it work, even if that meant working long hours of manual labor for most of his life. He owned a dairy farm in the early years of their marriage until the State eminent domain actions for the expansion of Highway 70 in early 1960s split his barn from the pasture. He owned and operated the local gas station off of Highway 99 in Nicolaus for several years in the 1960s when it still had mechanic bays for auto repair. For the majority of his life, he worked i n heavy equipment tire service, changing, mounting and maintaining tires for semi-trucks, large tractors and construction equipment. As his body could no longer take the hard labor, he tried his hand at sales. He even drove a taxi cab in Sacramento for several years in the 80s to support his family. He succeeded in making sure that his children never missed a day of school to work.

Fishing and vegetable gardening were his lifelong passions. His leisure time was often spent on trips with his family and friends, fishing in the many California rivers and lakes, as well as fishing trips out onto the San Francisco Bay. He planted and tended a vegetable garden every year for most of his life, even up to last year. He canned a lot of his produce and he made some of the most delicious dill pickles.

Harold died peacefully i n his home on May 30, 2021. He has joined his wife Betty, his sons Dr. Ralph Harold Schwall and Kenneth Joseph Schwall, his granddaughter Hannah Single-schwall, his daughter-in-law Sandy Schwall, his parents, his brothers Robert, Lawrence and Ralph, his sisters Anna and Dolores (Sister Mary Alberta), his nephews Robert and Frederick.

He is survived by his sister Sister Mary Evelyn Schwall of Beaverton Oregon; 5 of his 7 children – David (Janet) Schwall of Coeur d’alene, Idaho; Elizabeth (Robert) Berg of Tracy, California; Evelyn ( Nathaniel) White of Louisa, Virginia; Walter (Tracy) Schwall of Arboga, California; Christine (Jon) Greenall of Locust Grove, Virginia; daughter-in-law Gail Colbern; his grandchildren – Kevin Schwall and Katie Jolly; Sarah, Rachel and Gabe Single-schwall; Carolyn and Parker Berg; Meagan Bushey, Joey and Jake Schwall; Erica Richardson and Danica Smith; greatgrandchildren Eli, Emily, Shanae, and Chloe; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at Chapel of the Twin Cities, 715 Shasta Road, Yuba City, California. Viewing will be on Friday, June 18th from 4:00-8:00pm. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 19th at 11:00am, followed by the procession to the Nicolaus Cemetery at approximately 1:00pm with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SSRA Pool at P.O. Box 225, Nicolaus, California 95659.

On Monday, May 31, 2021, Marilyn Carleen Covey died peacefully at the age of 83. Marilyn was born on October 28, 1937, in Whittier, California and grew up in San Gabriel with her two sisters, Cloanne and Sharon.

Marilyn obtained her RN at St. Vincent’s College of Nursing and was a member of the first graduating class of women at the University of San Francisco, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She then earned a master’s degree in Nursing and Geriatrics at Chico State in 1989, where she graduated at the top of her class. She taught at Yuba Community College for many years, where she helped start the Associate Degree Program in Nursing. Her learning did not stop at the classroom, as she had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a curiosity that led her to delve into a range of subjects her entire life.

She married Harry Covey in 1961, with whom she raised their four children in Yuba City, California. Harry was a true outdoorsman and he and Marilyn shared their love of the outdoors with their children, through gardening, car trip vacations and weekends spent largely outdoors, camping, picnicking, on long drives in the country, fishing and visiting dear relatives in Montana. Marilyn’s children also treasure rich childhood memories of vacation time spent with Marilyn’s parents in Belvedere, Los Angeles and on Balboa Island. Marilyn’s love for her husband and children was unending and she played an active role in all their lives, as well as her grandchildren’s, who affectionately referred to her as “Nana.”

A devout Catholic, Marilyn was an active member of St. Isidore Parish in Yuba City and developed a lifelong habit of volunteer work that extended from local soup kitchens to the Unwed Mothers Foundation and beyond.

At the age of 55, Marilyn was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. For 28 years, she valiantly and quietly coped with the struggle, absolutely refusing to stop living and loving her life at the hands of the disease. She enjoyed traveling, spending many hours i n the garden, sewing, reading, and knitting, and she basked in the joy of a large and loving family, celebrating every milestone with pride and joy.

By all accounts, Marilyn was wise, kind, strong, and had a terribly witty sense of humor that would sneak up on you and have you in stitches before you knew it. She was the kind of person with whom you could l et down your guard, reveal your problems, and know that she would always have t he right thing to say. Marilyn’s kindness knew no bounds, always recognizing a need and reaching out with gentle care and attention.

In 2017, Marilyn moved to Merrill Gardens in Campbell, California, where she quickly made cherished friends. She was also elected to serve as a member of the Residents Council. Though she always missed Yuba City, and considered it her “home-home,” she was happy at Merrill Gardens and, when making her final decision of where to receive hospice care, she chose to be among her friends there. Marilyn’s family will always be grateful for the love and support they showed in Marilyn’s final days. Some of the community of The Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary reside at Merrill Gardens and were of special support during this very difficult time.

Above all, Marilyn loved life. It was not uncommon to find her in front of a large, rare steak with a perfectly made Manhattan in her hand. She could masterfully dismantle any of her nine grandchildren in a game of Words with Friends or play a rich sonata on the piano, a hobby she took up in her fifties, after having been diagnosed with MS. Whether you called her your friend, your mother, your Nana, or your neighbor, you could guarantee that any time spent with Marilyn would l eave you with a smile on your face and warmth in your heart. She will be truly, and always missed and will serve as an inspiration, an example, and a beacon for those of us who seek to be a better mother, aunt, sister, grandmother, teacher or friend. She just plain knew how to do it, whatever “it” was.

Marilyn is survived by her sister, Barbara (Cloanne) Wundrow; children, Maureen Tabari and husband Cyrus, Richard Covey and wife, Lisa, Marianne Wolf and husband Jon, and Bernadette Kallhoff and husband Joe; as well as eight grandchildren, Carleen, Patrick and Camille Tabari, Rachel and

Katherine Covey, Abigail, Olivia and Richard Wolf and Anthony Kallhoff and wife Kendra. She also l eaves multiple nieces and nephews.

She is preceded i n death by her husband, Harry Covey; her parents, Carleen and Thomas Phelan; and her sister, Sharon Phelan.

A celebration of Marilyn’s life will be held on Friday, J une 18, 2021, at St. Lucy Parish in Campbell, California, beginning with a rosary at 1:30 followed by a mass at 2:00 with a reception after at Merrill Gardens. Due to Covid we ask that you please RSVP to rlcovey@gmail.com.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to t he National Multiple Sclerosis Society https://mssociety.donordrive.com/cam paign/marilyn-coveyMemorial or to the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary at https://www.snjmusontari o.org/support-us/givenow/ or SNJM P.O.
