Hal Stocker, of Challenge, passed away June 10, 2021. He was born April 1, 1927, in Portland, Oregon, to Presbyterian Minister Mortimer and Myrtle Stocker.

Hal attended public school in Oregon and Washington, until midwa y through high school, when his parents sent him to finish high school at a religious boarding school in Mount Hermon, Massachusetts.

On graduation, World War II was still on, so he enlisted in the Navy, as Seaman 1st class. He served for about one year, as the war had ended.

He then went on to spend 4 years at Princeton University, and another 4 years at C o l u mbi a Med i c a l School, followed by 2 years of pathology at the Hospital of Pennsylvania, and finally 2 years Internal Medicine residency at Stanford Medical Hospital, then in San Francisco, California.

He then set his career in the specialty of Internal Medicine at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, California, which kept him busy for the next 28 years. As a doctor he was passionate about his patients. The day before he saw them he would take time and review their chart. He also put in the charts personal things such as how many children "Mrs. Doe" had, or that "Mr. Smith" loved fishing, just things that made him remember the patient outside their medical problems.

Hal a l s o d o nat e d about a month out of a year to serve on a hospital ship called Hope, which supplied medical attention to disadvantage countries. Once he went to the Navaho Reservation and donated his medical abilities there.

When Hal retired from Kaiser, he moved to Challenge. After a few years he got bored and went into politics. He was a Yuba County Supervisor (Fifth District) for 20 years. His main objective was to preserving the natural beauty of the foothill by discouraging large subdivisions and excessive housing. He cared about what the people in their communities wanted. He would attend many of their meetings, sent out questioners (at his own expense) and went to many of their social gatherings. He donated money and t i me to many of the organizations in his district.

His favorite pastime was tennis, gardening, growing fruit trees and the Forty-niners.

Hal is survived by his wife of 53 years, Leah, who will dearly miss him.

He is preceded i n death by his parents; brother, Paul; and sister, Irine Russell.

A small private gathering will be held at a later date.
