Her husband, Dr. Gurbachan S. Janda, accepted an Orthopedic Surgeon position at Marysville Medical Clinic in June, 1970. He was the first Indian physician in the Marysville / Yuba City area.

Affectionately known as Gurdie, Mrs. Janda was the first woman in her small town to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, which she obtained from Punjab University. She later received her Master of Education degree from the University of London in England. She was a well-loved teacher and high school principal for many years.

She spoke six languages, and volunteered to teach Punjabi and English at her home after her retirement. She was fun-loving, shrewd, a sweet and gentle soul, generous, a wonderful mother, and a very loyal friend.

Mrs. Janda was passionate about teaching; she loved children, she walked her neighborhood daily, loved to read, and she spent a lot of time taking care of all her rose bushes.
