Richard Eldon “Dick” Diggs, 80, of Yuba City, CA, passed away on May 5th, 2022.

Dick was born on July 15th, 1941, to Clarence “Buck” and Lottie Diggs in Westwood, CA. After Dick graduated from Westwood High School in 1960, he went on to study at Bethany Bible College in Santa Cruz, where he received a degree in Pastoral Theology.

After graduation, he was a Senior Pastor in Truckee for a brief time before moving to Yuba City to serve as an Associate Pastor at 1st Assembly of God. It was during this time that he was set up on a blind date with Joan Applegarth, who would become his wife 7 months later on June 28th, 1968. They added a son, David, to their family in 1973.

Dick went on to teach 6th grade at Brittan Elementary School in Sutter, was the Associate Pastor at Gray Avenue Church, and was also known as a tremendous Bible teacher. He loved to work in his workshop, making all sorts of things like airplanes, name plates and tables.

Dick was preceded in death by brothers, Don, Ralph and Ken; sister, Betty; and parents, Buck and Lottie. He is survived by his loving wife, Joan; son, David (Carrie); and sister, Myrna.

A graveside service will be held at Sutter Cemetery on Tuesday, May 17th, 2022, at 11 am, with a reception following at Hillcrest Plaza.

Betty Jean (Hamon) Thompson of Yuba City, CA, lived 95 wonderful years before her passing on April 26, 2022. A native of Marysville, she always thought of Yuba-sutter as home.

Betty lived with a vibrant spirit and a grateful heart. She was a bright light to many, and a glowing example of kindness and generosity. She loved her family. Betty will be deeply treasured and fondly remembered by all those who knew her.

Veronica Wright, 41, of Marysville, CA went to heaven on May 5, 2022. A lifelong Yubasutter resident, Veronica was born on May 1, 1981 and loved everyone, and had a passion for children.

She fulfilled this passion by becoming a teacher and later opening a daycare with her loving husband to fulfill her passion. She had a love of Halloween, especially Hocus Pocus, was a loving wife, mother, sister, daughter, granddaugh­ter, and niece. She was an amazing woman and always had a smile on her face that could light up a room. Veronica had a love of nature, gardening, and music. She also thoroughly enjoyed arts and crafts and going on new travel adventures with her family. Veronica enjoyed trying to cook her grandma’s favorite dishes and spending time with her children.

She is survived by her husband and best friend of 10 years, John Wright, and their children Aryabella Wright and Branttley Wright, parents Mario & Cristy Romero, brothers Rafa Perez and Michael Romero, and her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her Grandparen­ts Jose and Lupe Perez, Aunt Bea Perez, cousins Mario Perez, Christophe­r Wilkins, and Manny Romero. She is missed deeply by all who knew and loved her.

Viewing will be at Holycross Funeral Home on Friday, May 20, 2022 from 4-6 PM, with a rosary directly after from 6-7 PM. A celebratio­n of life is planned for mid June at a location to be determined.

On the evening of May 2, 2022, Mabel L. Whatley went to rest in the arms of her Lord and Savior.

Mabel was born on August 17, 1917, to Claude and Mary "Lula" Moore, in Plattsburg, Missouri.

Mabel was a Sutter County resident for approximat­ely 65 years. For a period of time, she was a cook for Frye and Lonon Farming.

Mabel was a homemaker and worked tirelessly at raising her four children and watching her grandchild­ren. Along with her late husband, Shorty, she was a member of Sutter Community Church.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; two sisters; her husband, Shorty; and her youngest daughter, Starleen.

Survivors include her daughter, Norma Sampley of Yuba City; sons, James Whatley of Yuba City and Dwight Whatley of French Camp. Mabel had eleven grandchild­ren and seventeen great-grandchild­ren.

Graveside service will be held at the Sutter Cemetery off Butte House Road on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at 11: am.

Officiatin­g the service will be her former pastor, Rev. Deaton of Caldwell, Idaho.

Arrangemen­ts are under the direction of Ullrey Memorial Chapel of Yuba City.

1936-2022

Donna grew up in Gridley and Wheatland. She settled in Marysville after she married. She was loving, funny, and hardworkin­g. God and her children were her highest priority, and when her grandsons were born they took center stage in her life. She enjoyed nature, always feeling the need to care for and protect it.

Donna is survived by her children, Kiersten of Monterey, CA, and Nicholas of Loma Rica, CA; as well as her grandchild­ren, Jordan of Stanford, CA, and Logan of Loma Rica, CA.

Services were held with an attendance of 130.

Jerry Don Van Wart, resident of Live Oak, CA, and Sutter County for 29 years, entered into rest in Marysville, CA, on April 26, 2022, at the age of 80. A native of Cheyenne, WY, who enjoyed the outdoors.

Beloved husband of Shirley (deceased) for 48 years, loving father of two children, Judy Ferrigno (Matteo - deceased) of Stockton and David Van Wart (Debbie) of Manteca; devoted son of H.M. and Goldie Van Wart; dear brother of Vonnie Giordano of Placervill­e and William Van Wart (Karen) of Port Richey, FL; loving grandfathe­r of Francesca Ferrigno, Danielle Boomer, Henry Van Wart and Amanda Ferrigno and one greatgrand­child, Evelyn Ferrigno-garcia.

Family and friends may visit on Monday, May 16, 2022, after 10:00 AM at Chapel of the Highlands, El Camino Real at 194 Millwood Drive in Millbrae, CA, with a Funeral Liturgy at 11:00 AM. Committal will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma.
