Screening of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ kicks off new programing series at Lee Burrows

-

This month, Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture will be kicking off its new “4th Friday at the Burrows” series with a screening of “The Wizard of Oz.”

This year marks the 85th anniversary of the film’s premiere and theaters across the country are expected to be celebrating the occasion. With this in mind, organizers have invited guests to join them at the Lee Burrows Center for the Arts in Marysville for a family friendly and nostalgic movie showing.

Those who wish to dress up will have the chance to participate in an all-ages costume contest at 6 p.m. prior to the show which is scheduled for Jan. 26. Tickets are currently on sale at yubasutterarts.org starting at $10 for adults and $5 for students and children under the age of 18.

While “The Wizard of Oz” might be best known as a 1939 Metro-goldwynmayer film, this was in fact not its first dramatization. In June 1902, an extravagantly mounted stage adaptation opened in Chicago to critical acclaim. Both the stage play and film are adaptations of the children’s book, “The Wonderful Wizard of

Oz,” written by L. Frank Baum, published in 1900. The film has since been celebrated, not only for its use of Technicolor, but also for its storytelling and songs which earned it six Academy Award nominations. It did not win the Oscar for “Best Picture,” however Judy Garland’s rendition of “Somewhere Over the

Rainbow” did earn a “Best Original Song” statuette. The film also took home “Best Original Score.”

4th Friday at the Burrows

The idea for the 4th Friday at the Burrows series came in part from a community desire to see more programming presented at Yuba Sutter

Arts’ Marysville campus, the Lee Burrows Center for the Arts. Post pandemic, establishing programs at the Burrows has become a priority for staff who felt that a regular event on a set day each month might help improve attendance.
