Testing strengthens educational community

- By Fal Asrani, ED.D. MJUSD Superintendent

Did you know that Marysville Joint Unified School District students in grades 3 to 8 and 11 will be participating in the annual California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress this April which is pivotal in assessing academic progress? The student results assist with placement in accented courses like GATE program in the elementary school level and honors/ap/ Dual Enrollment/ GATE placements at the middle and high school levels. Using individual student performance data is also gaining importance in post-high school admissions and scholarship applications.

Although district internal assessments revealed commendable growth in reading and math scores last year, there was a notable gap in achievement in 2023 state tests. To mitigate this gap, we have provided resources for districtwide curriculum and data collaboration led by teachers, and before and after school and intersession tutoring throughout this school year. We are also better prepared as schools have returned to the new normal. Strong teaching and learning is evident throughout the district. Additionally, districtwide assessments again show strong growth in reading and math this year which should translate to higher performance in the state assessments. With encouragement and focused discussions, parents can actively engage in enhancing student success on these tests. Your involvement is key to ensuring that every student meets their grade level standards.

We acknowledge that state test results are an important factor in improving community perception of our schools. We urge our families to understand the importance of these tests and share your expectations with your students. Testing is a manifestation of learning

– an opportunity for students to demonstrate their acquired knowledge. Let’s emphasize the importance of giving their best effort. The testing schedule for each school has been shared. Together, we can strengthen our educational community.
