Lindhurst FFA program continues to shine

- By Fal Asrani, ED.D. MJUSD Superintendent

Did you know that the FFA program at Lindhurst High School has had a recordsetting year this year?

Most recently, the program announced its first Regional FFA Officer in the school’s history.

On April 27, members from the Superior Region FFA gathered at the Chico State University Farm for the annual Superior Region FFA Meeting. During the meeting, members from the Region’s 58 FFA programs voted on who would serve as the Region’s leaders for the 2024-2025 school year. After an extensive application, interview, and impromptu question process, Lindhurst High

School’s Elizabeth Silva was announced as the 2024-2025 Superior Region FFA Secretary.

Lindhurst FFA has also traveled thousands of miles this year allowing students to engage in a wide range of career and leadership development events. Students have traveled as far north as Klamath Falls, Oregon, and as far south as Pismo Beach, California. Students have competed in contests including Job Interview, Best Informed Greenhand, Veterinary Science, Soil & Land Evaluation, Horse Judging, Agricultural Welding, and Metal Fabrication. At many of these events, students tour college campuses including Chico State, Butte College, Fresno State, Cal Poly, and many more.

Students have engaged in FFA leadership conferences including the Chapter Officer Leadership Conference,

Greenhand Leadership Conference, Made for Excellence Academy, Advanced Leadership Academy, and the California FFA State Leadership Conference.

Lindhurst FFA has worked hard to strengthen and diversify opportunities on campus as well. Students put on the Lindhurst FFA Pumpkin Patch where over 600 MJUSD elementary students came to the school farm to engage with the high schools in activities, including picking their own pumpkin. On campus, FFA members are invited to participate in lunchtime and after-school events to foster peer relationships, encourage confidence, and promote leadership development.

Lindhurst FFA is excited to have 23 students participate in the Yuba-sutter Fair Junior Livestock Auction this summer. Students have raised various livestock projects including beef cattle, hogs, sheep, and turkeys. For most students, this experience has been made possible through the use of the oncampus school farm at Lindhurst High School.

For the first time in many years, Lindhurst FFA hosted a plant sale which was open to staff, students, and the community. The plants were planted and grown by students in the Plant and Soil Science pathway, a new pathway to LHS this year. Profits from the sale are used to take students on many of the activities listed above.

As the school year comes to a close, the FFA program at Lindhurst High School continues to reflect on the goals set at

the beginning of this year to strengthen the program for the 2024-2025 year: 1) Create a culture of trust, belonging, security, and growth among students, staff, and community; 2) Restore facilities to an operational state that students and stakeholders are proud of; 3) Remove barriers of access for

students to all components of the three-ring model of agricultural education; 4) Expose students to a wide range of opportunities in FFA.

These opportunities for students have been made possible by the generous support of our community, the Yuba

River Endowment, MJUSD College and Career Department, the LHS

Agricultural Advisory Committee, and the new administrators and agriculture teachers at Lindhurst High School.

We are constantly inspired by the quality and caliber of students at Lindhurst

High School and are excited to see what the future holds for the students of our FFA program. For more information on the program, contact teacher Chase Bisby at cbisby@ Mjusd.k12.ca.us.
