Tom Galvin to perform free concert tackling Yuba-sutter history
What are some of your favorite songs about famous historic events in U.S. History? A childhood favorite was the “Battle of New Orleans” written by Jimmy Driftwood and made popular by Johnny Horton. There’s “Which Side Are You On?” written in 1931 by union activist Florence Reece. “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” is a song written by
Robbie Robertson about a poor white Southerner during the last year of the American Civil War. Maybe the best known of all is the “Star-spangled Banner” by Francis Scott Key.
Now the public is invited to attend a free concert about local history unique to Yuba-sutter and the surrounding region. Tom Galvin, a Yuba Countybased singer songwriter and his band will perform a show titled “Heroes & Victims” on Saturday,
June 15, 2pm, in the main gallery at the Sutter County History Museum, 1333 Butte House Road in Yuba City. The album and performance are made possible thanks to a generous grant from the Upstate CA Creative Corps, a part of the CA Arts Council. The program was designed to serve vulnerable communities and those identified by the CA Healthy Places Index. It was designed to increase ways in which artists are engaged with public work through various art forms to create awareness about subjects including water and energy conservation, social justice, and public health.
This is the concert premier of Tom’s remarkable new song cycle about the colorful history of Yuba-sutter and environs. As a transplant from the Midwest, Tom has been fascinated to learn about all that has occurred in the area from the frontier and early gold rush days to modern day including disputes over water rights and the mistreatment of indigenous people and Japanese Americans during WWII. Specific songs cover topics including the Yuba Water Accord, explorer James Beckwourth, the Arboga Assembly Center, and the Japanese American WWII experience, the native American Ishi, the Sutter Buttes, the perils the Mormon’s experienced on their journey west, and other relevant themes. In other words, be prepared to get the whole story about the good, the bad and the ugly about our local history.

Tom Galvin, is a lifelong musician who “troubadoured” around the country for many years while also training to become a psychotherapist. He has written songs for touring bands from the American Midwest to the American far west. Tom and his musician wife, Gay, have both appeared in numerous concerts at the Burrows Theater and the Sutter Theater Center for the Arts and other local venues with various ensembles playing a variety of styles and genres of music.
In addition to Tom on guitar and vocals, the Heroes & Victims band includes Rich Celio on drums, Dylan Mcconnell on bass, Rick Kirkpatrick on lead guitar and Gay Galvin on keyboard and vocals.
