Common Sense Prevails
I attended the talent show at the Pineville Primary School on May 22. A red-haired second-grader was called to the stage and was announced he was going to demonstrate his “whittling” skills. He sat on the floor Indian-style, was handed a pocket knife, then began to sharpen a round dull point on the tip of a twig. The classic instrumental Dueling Banjo’s was playing in the background. He explained that he had just started whittling as a new hobby two weeks ago. A teacher with a microphone bent down beside him and asked him unrehearsed questions. His answers were pure honesty and hilarious! Tears of entertaining laughter filled my eyes, as the music was reaching it’s fevered pitch. The young school audience was caught up in the moment too, and began a single clap in unison, faster and faster, matching the song’s famous ending. When the banjo and guitar playing ended, he stood up and took a well deserved and appreciative bow. Everyone whooped and hollered loudly. Smiles were galore. What an amazing impromptu performance!
What was even more spectacular was the fact that the leadership of the school gave him the freedom to preform his act. In a world where a lack of common-sense dictates silly decision-making, I am thankful I live in an area where common sense is still practiced. Thank you school administration!!
