Show-Me-Select Heifers Average $1,714

-

CARTHAGE — The 36th sale of Show-Me-Select bred heifers averaged $1,714 on 339 head May 19. The sale was held at Joplin Regional Stockyards with 21 consignors, mostly from southwest Missouri.

The evening started out on a somber note as storms hit nearby and damaged some buildings east of the yards near Stotts City. It was classified as an EF-1 tornado.

“The wind and heavy rain and threat of storms held the attendance down,” said Eldon Cole, livestock specialist with University of Missouri Extension.

In spite of the weather the top end of the sale still saw active bidding on Tier Two and artificially bred heifers. The 29, Tier Two AI bred heifers averaged $2,267.

In contrast, the Tier One bulls averaged $1,574 on 167 head.

The sale top was $3,200 on three Angus/Simmental, Tier Two heifers that were genomically tested with the Igenity Silver test.

The consignor was Shiloh Land & Cattle Co., Mt. Vernon, with the buyer Eugene Dilbeck, Cassville. Shiloh had seven head in the sale that averaged $2,786 which was the top for the sale.

Another popular consignment came from the longtime consignor, Nolan Kleiboeker, Wentworth, who averaged $2,033 on 45 head. Boosting his average was 21, Tier Two-AI bred heifers that brought $2,145 per head.

They were black whitefaced heifers out of Polled Hereford bulls and high percentage Angus cows.

Sam Schaumann, Billings, sold four Red Angus-Simmental cross heifers for a $1,900 average.

The volume buyer was Trevon Ogden, Lockwood, who purchased 44 head for an average of $1,614.

Close behind on numbers was Jared Kleiboeker, Wentworth, who purchased 33 head at $1,793.

“Considering the weather disruption, the sale still came off as good as could be expected. It’s evident the repeat buyers realize the added-value benefit of the heifers whether it’s being AI-bred, Tier Twos, genomically tested or ultrasound pregnancy tested and are willing to pay for them,” said Cole.

The next Show-Me-Select bred heifer sale in southwest Missouri is scheduled for Nov. 17 at Joplin Regional Stockyards.
