McDon­ald County Fights To Fi­nal Minute Of Over­time

It took un­til near the end of the first over­time be­fore pow­er­ful Monett could claim a vic­tory over the McDon­ald County High School soc­cer team.

Monett de­feated McDon­ald County, 3-2, on Sept. 13 at Monett High School when the Cubs knocked in the game-win­ner in the fi­nal minute of the first 10-minute over­time ses­sion.

“We played re­ally well,” said coach John De La Torre. “It was prob­a­bly our best game so far. Monett is a very good team. They have one of the best play­ers in the state, and we were able to con­tain him all game. I was re­ally proud of the way the kids fought. We are get­ting bet­ter ev­ery day.”

The first half ended with­out either team be­ing able to score. Early in the sec­ond half, Eh Doh Say scored to give the Mus­tangs a 1-0 lead.

Monett an­swered with back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 ad­van­tage.

But Car­los Mar­cos sent the game to over­time with a goal late in reg­u­la­tion time.

McDon­ald County falls to 1-3-1 en­ter­ing its Sept. 18 match at Spring­field Catholic. The Mus­tangs re­turn home to face Carthage on Sept. 20. Game time is 5 p.m.
