McDonald County Fights To Final Minute Of Overtime
It took until near the end of the first overtime before powerful Monett could claim a victory over the McDonald County High School soccer team.
Monett defeated McDonald County, 3-2, on Sept. 13 at Monett High School when the Cubs knocked in the game-winner in the final minute of the first 10-minute overtime session.
“We played really well,” said coach John De La Torre. “It was probably our best game so far. Monett is a very good team. They have one of the best players in the state, and we were able to contain him all game. I was really proud of the way the kids fought. We are getting better every day.”
The first half ended without either team being able to score. Early in the second half, Eh Doh Say scored to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
Monett answered with back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 advantage.
But Carlos Marcos sent the game to overtime with a goal late in regulation time.
McDonald County falls to 1-3-1 entering its Sept. 18 match at Springfield Catholic. The Mustangs return home to face Carthage on Sept. 20. Game time is 5 p.m.
