Lady Mustangs Win District Championship
McDonald County’s Kylie Helm put an end to an exciting softball game when the senior hit her second homer of the game to give the Lady Mustangs a 15-14 win over the Monett Cubs.
The McDonald County High School volleyball team picked up its second win of the season during the Lady Mustang Volleyball Classic held on Oct. 13 at MCHS.
The Lady Mustangs went 1-3 on the day, with their win coming in a 25-19, 25-19 decision over Diamond in McDonald County’s third match
of the day.
In the first set, McDonald County jumped out to a 10-4 lead and stretched the margin to 13-5 before Diamond closed the gap with a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 15-11.
McDonald County led 20-15, but the Lady Wildcats scored four of the next five points to make the score 21-19. The Lady Mustangs then scored the final four points of the set for the win.
In the second set, McDonald County took a 10-6 lead only to see Diamond come back to take a 17-15 lead.
The Lady Mustangs answered with six consecutive points for a 21-17 lead and then scored four of the match’s final five points for the win.
In McDonald County’s final match of the tournament, Seneca dominated the first set to claim a 25-8 win.
In the second set, Seneca jumped out to a 10-4 advantage before the Lady Mustangs rallied to take a 17-16 lead. But the eventual tournament champions responded by winning nine of the final 12 points to for the win and the tournament title with a 4-0 record.
McDonald County dropped its opening match to East Newton despite the Lady Mustangs taking leads late into both sets. The Lady Patriots won the first set, 25-22, and then took the second set, 26-24. McDonald County then dropped a 25-10, 25-11 decision to College Heights in its second match of the day.
College Heights finished second behind Seneca with a 3-1 record, followed by East Newton at 2-2, McDonald County 1-3 and Diamond 0-4.
McDonald County hosted Nevada on Oct. 16 before entering the Missouri Class 4, District 11, Volleyball Championships at Joplin High School. The Lady Mustangs play Carl Junction at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 23.
