You Can’t Fix Stupid

- By Kevin Wilson KEVIN WILSON IS A FORMER STATE REPRESENTATIVE WHO WAS BORN IN GOODMAN AND NOW LIVES IN NEOSHO. OPINIONS EXPRESSED ARE THOSE OF THE AUTHOR.

A few years ago there was a group of “redneck” comedians that performed together and called themselves the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. I would say that you either loved their humor or you loathed it — not sure there was much room in between.

It probably won’t come as a big shock to anyone that I loved listening to them. Each of the four performers had their own “shtick” and the group truly complimented each other’s comedic talents.

One of the comedians was a guy by the name of Ron White. Now Ron was and is pretty crude — always smoking a cigar and usually performs with a glass of “beverage” in his hand. Probably his most notable quote was one that has become a cultural icon — “You can’t fix stupid.” Think that pretty much sums up much of what is going on in society today.

A lot of terms have multiple meanings, so I looked up the definition of “stupid.” The first definition that comes up is “having or showing a great lack of intelligence or common sense.” Bingo — a great lack of common sense is what appears to be a plague in our country today.

I would never use the term stupid to categorize someone who is just not as smart as someone else. Heck, that fits me to a “tee” when compared to a lot of people, and I sure don’t think I’m the sharpest tool in the shed. And, sometimes my common sense is a little lacking. But, when compared to some of our “learned” leaders and some people around the nation, I’m practically a genius.

A boss told me one time that I was ignorant. Of course, I quickly took that as an insult but he went on to say the term just meant that I didn’t know something — it didn’t mean that I wasn’t capable of learning it. I understood his reasoning but, being from southwest Missouri, it still kind of went against the grain.

So what are a couple of examples of “You just can’t fix stupid”? First up, would be our presumptuous next Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. (On a personal note, I really hope that she is elected Speaker — I will never have to look very hard to have something to write about.) She has now started referring to the proposed wall separating the U.S. from Mexico as the “immoral” wall.

Where in the world could you say that a wall to protect our borders would be “immoral”? You might have differing ideas on how to keep people from just wandering across the border and suddenly having access to a plethora of government benefits paid for by those of us who actually pay taxes. But, to call it “immoral” is pretty much the definition of “You just can’t fix stupid.”

I wonder if Nancy Pelosi has security around her home? I would almost bet everything I own that she has a security system, armed guards and most likely a wall around her property. And why so much security? To protect herself from people illegally entering her property and possibly her house.

Am I to believe that she is more important than our nation? Should we not be able to expect the same kind of security as she enjoys? Apparently not — well at least in the eyes of many liberals.

Okay, second up on the “You just can’t fix stupid” list are those around the nation that suddenly think the song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” is “seriously problematic.” Apparently, some claim that it “features sexism and bullying.” And others suggest that the story was about “racism and homophobia, while calling Santa Claus abusive and bigoted.”

You just can’t fix stupid. If you listen to the song or watch the animated movie, you understand that, yes, Rudolph was bullied, but he went past that bullying and used what some perceived to be a disability to “save the day.” And, at the end, everyone came to the realization that they had been bullying him and apologized.

How much more can you expect out of a story that has a happy ending and actually supports the anti-bullying movement? And as to racism and homophobia, what in the heck are some of these people smoking?

I’m just not sure how much more of “stupid” and “political correctness” our nation can survive! I have never seen so many thinskinned whiners that are so easily offended by literally everything. And, can you believe that many of our more liberal institutions of higher learning are creating “safe spaces” where the “snowflake generation” can retreat from anything that might make them uncomfortable.

I wonder what our forefathers would think about what we have become. I’m supposing that many of them would be shaking their heads and saying, “You just can’t fix stupid.”
