Mount Vernon Runs Past MCHS

The top 10 stateranke­d Mount Vernon Lady Mountainee­rs proved their ranking is worthy with a 64-16 win over McDonald County on

Feb. 14 at MCHS.

The Mount Vernon Mountainee­rs broke open a close game by starting the second quarter with a 21-0 run on the way to claiming an 80-45 decision over McDonald County on Feb. 14 at MCHS.

Mount Vernon jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead to start the game, but a three-point play by Cooper Reece late in the first quarter cut the Mountainee­r lead to 15-9 at the end of the period.

But Mount Vernon scored 21 straight points in the second quarter before Saul Garcia and Reece combined for the last five points of the period that ended with Mount Vernon holding a 36-14 lead at intermissi­on.

The Mountainee­rs built a 57-22 lead late in the third period before Pierce Harmon hit two treys and Reece scored five points to cut the lead to 62-35 entering the fourth quarter.

Mount Vernon opened the fourth quarter with a 16-8 lead to stretch the lead to 78-43 midway through the period on the way to the 80-45 win.

Reece finished with 26 points, including 19 in the second half, to lead McDonald County. Harmon and Saul Garcia added nine points each. Cale Adamson had one.

Mount Vernon’s Kelly Vaughn scored 25 points to lead the Mountainee­rs, while Slater Eldridge had 20 and Mason Ballay added 13.

McDonald County fell to 4-18 for the season heading into its Feb. 21 game against Marshfield at MCHS. Games begin at 5 p.m.

Reeds Spring

The Reeds Spring Wolves built a 16-point lead early in the second half and then held on over the final 10 minutes to claim a 63-56 win on Feb. 11 at Reeds Spring High School.

Boston Dowd started the Mustang comeback with a short jumper before Reece scored five straight points to cut the lead to 40-31 midway through the third

quarter. The teams traded baskets the rest of the period, with the Wolves holding a 45-37 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Reeds Spring maintained its nine-point lead until Cole Martin hit a three-pointer with 4:45 left to cut the Wolves’ lead to 54-48.

Harmon hit both ends of a one-and-one and Reece followed with a put-back to cut the lead to 56-52 with 2:52 remaining, but McDonald County could get no closer as Reeds Spring hit seven free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Reece scored 22 points and Dowd added 19 to lead McDonald County. Harmon finished with seven points, while Martin had five and Adamson three.

Lance Hafar scored 16 points to lead four Wolves in double figures.

Reeds Spring added a 47-43 win in the junior varsity game. McDonald County trailed 15-16 at halftime but rallied for a 32-30 lead after three quarters only to get outscored 17-11 in the fourth quarter.

Parker Harris and Koby McAlister scored 11 points each to lead McDonald County, followed by Colliar Gottfried with eight points, Teddy Reedybacon and Harmon with three each, Irael Marcos, Garrett Gricks and Adamson two each and Jackson Clarkson one.
