Sound That Changed The World

- By Joyce Walters

“The Sound That Changed The World,” yes that is what Pastor gave as a title for his message. Unusual until he began to explain that there are many sounds that affect our daily lives. Lest you hear a sound and can identify it, how will you act upon its call? We have heard there will be the sound of a trumpet when Jesus returns. The sound of the trumpet was heard as a cry for battle. If they failed to hear the trumpet and were found not ready, the end would have been defeat.

In John 3:1-8 we hear Jesus talking to Nicodemus about being born again. The Jewish ruler had seen miracles performed and knew that it was only through the Spirit of the Lord that these things could be done. So he asked many questions about how could a man be born again; he was looking at birth in a manner of the flesh not of the spirit. Jesus explained that what is born of flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the spirit is spirit. Many of us have had a hard time understanding this statement until we hear the call of the Holy Ghost. The spirit that Jesus spoke of is as the wind when it blows; we can hear it but we cannot tell where it comes from or where it goes. The Bible says if a man hath an ear and does not hear the word of the Lord and believe, he will be forever lost.

John 5:24 warns us of that very thing but also promises that if we hear and believe on him that sent Jesus, we will have everlasting life. This means that we will not come into condemnation but will pass from death unto life. That is what Jesus means by born again. We will have a new life in Christ. Acts 2 tells of the sound that changed the world. On the day of Pentecost Jesus and the disciples were in the upper room when they heard a sound from heaven as a mighty rushing wind. This was the Spirit, the Holy Ghost that was sent to lead and guide people in the righteousness of God.

So many sounds are heard but not understood. The word was written in the spirit and we must search to learn the meaning of what we hear. We are promised in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, we are not to be ignorant but we should learn that those who are asleep in Jesus will rise again to live in their heavenly home. Verse 16 tells of the sound of the Lord descending from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trump of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Verse 17 tells that we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

You see the importance of sound and hearing? I do not want to miss the sound of that trumpet which will call us home. Today the people are hearing so much evil through all sorts of sounds. Our minds are troubled by the news on radio, television and newspapers. These are surely times when we need a strong bond with God and his people. We need each other for strength to stand when all seems so dark. We cannot find peace or help from the things of this world. There is a way that we can help turn this world around. God said, if my people which are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray, and turn from their wicked ways He will hear from heaven and heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14).

You see, God sends us a message for an escape from any situation that discourages us or makes us feel helpless. God is a merciful God and will extend His hand of mercy to us if we will obey His commands. We just have to turn from the wicked ways that are set before us and cling to His unchanging hand. Listen to the sounds and heed the warnings of what’s to come upon the unbelievers. Reach out in the direction of that sound as of a rushing mighty wind and be among those who are going to be victorious. The comforter was sent when Jesus ascended to sit at the right hand of the Father. Let us hear the call to prayer for our land and those who are suffering because the world has led them astray.

If you do not have a home church, we invite you to come worship with us at the Cove Mission of Hope in Lanagan, Mo. Our church is at the top of the hill, where we meet with our Lord Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. We meet on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for a very spirit-filled time of Bible Study. Pastor Bob and Sister Naomi Cartwright are always there to welcome you with the Love of Christ.
