What is your favorite piece of gear from 2018? I asked my fellow gear-loving staffers to MJ tell me about the best of all the cool stuff they played with this year.

Columbia Outdry Ex Gold Tech Shell: Constructed, the company says, of “breathable body armor,” it’s as waterproof as it is breathable. On wet bike commutes, it kept me bone dry and barely even sweaty. It fits and looks great, too.

Away Bigger Carry-on With Pocket: The name is uninspired, but everything else about this hard-sided suitcase is genius, from the impossibly smooth roller wheels to the thoughtfully designed interior compartments to a removable battery for charging gadgets. It makes airport travel fun again.
MARJORIE KORN, SENIOR EDITOR
Hoka One One Hupana 2: Their sole is understated—an anomaly for Hoka—so I was pleasantly surprised they retained the company’s signature easy ride. The Hupana has become my go-to for all my workouts, including classes and weightlifting.

Two-parter: The Yakima Showdown load assist car rack with Old Town’s Castine 140 kayak. The Yakima means I can load and unload the boat solo (or carry two SUPS) for faster put-in. The Castine 140 has a ridiculously comfortable seat, more storage than most boats, and a retractable cockpit-mounted glove box that’s sealed, keeping your phone and keys nearby and dry.

Dyson V8 Cordless Stick Vac: For the cordcutters out there: This rechargeable cleaning machine somehow makes vacuuming less of a chore.

Vuarnet Edge Pilot: These sunglasses were equally as useful on an African safari as they were hiking a 14er in Colorado. Best of all, they look sharp and are damn near impossible to scratch.

Super Nintendo ES Classic Edition: A delightful throwback to the games of my youth with simple connectivity, portability, and—most important— the opportunity to unfurl my Mario Kart domination to a whole new generation (aka my son).
