Joseph Gre­gory Essig passed away on Oc­to­ber 22, 2018, at the age of 70 years.

A na­tive of Merced, Joe at­tended Merced High School, grad­u­at­ing with the class of 1966 prior to join­ing the mil­i­tary. Af­ter serv­ing in the Viet­nam War, Joe con­tin­ued his ed­u­ca­tion at the Univer­sity of San Fran­cisco and grad­u­ated with a bach­e­lor’s de­gree in Psy­chol­ogy.

Af­ter 28 years of work­ing for the Cal­i­for­nia High­way Pa­trol, Joe re­tired and en­joyed spend­ing his week­ends go­ing for drives in the hills to spend time with fam­ily or en­joy­ing many mu­sic fes­ti­vals along the coast with his long­time part­ner, Jan.

Joe was pre­ceded in death by his mother Vir­ginia “DeeDee” Essig and his brother Robert Essig, Jr.

He is sur­vived by his long­time part­ner, Jan­ice Braw­ley, his fa­ther Robert “Bob” Essig Sr., his sis­ter Re­becca (John) An­der­son, brother Guy (Grace) Essig, Un­cle Paul Sanches, daugh­ter Shan­non Essig, sons Joey (Am­ber) Essig and RC Essig. Along with 4 grand­chil­dren, 2 nephews, and 1 niece.

There will be no ser­vices. If you would like to honor Joe’s me­mory, buy a round of drinks for your friends the next time you are out and raise your glasses to a life well lived.
