Wil­liam Don­ald Cairncross was born Au­gust 8, 1928 in Jamesville, Wis­con­sin to Wil­liam and Elvira Cairncross. He en­tered into death on Novem­ber 29, 2018 in Merced, Cal­i­for­nia. Wil­liam was known to most as “Don”. Don and his fam­ily left Wis­con­sin when he was 8 years old in pur­sue of a bet­ter life in Cal­i­for­nia where they made their home in Merced County. Don learned the mean­ing of hard work at a young age. He worked on var­i­ous dairies and ranches un­til he en­listed in the Army where, he served from 19501953. He was a proud Korean War vet­eran. When he was dis­charged from the Army, he be­came em­ployed at Bet­ten­court Ranch. There he worked and pro­vided for his fam­ily for over 50 years as an equip­ment op­er­a­tor. Don mar­ried the love of his life, Betty on April 10, 1953 they re­mained hap­pily mar­ried for 65 years. They made their home in Win­ton and raised 6 chil­dren. Don was a lov­ing hus­band, fa­ther and grand­fa­ther. When Don was not work­ing, he en­joyed be­ing out­doors with his sons, fam­ily and friends, he en­joyed camp­ing, fish­ing and hunt­ing. Even trav­el­ing a few times out of state to en­joy a hunt­ing ad­ven­ture. Don was also an avid sports fan, and knew ev­ery­thing there was to know about each sport he watched. He will al­ways be known as be­ing a for­ever faith­ful San Fran­cisco 49er and Chicago Cubs fan. For many years Don en­joyed go­ing to pro­fes­sional foot­ball and base­ball games with his sons. Don al­ways en­joyed hav­ing his home full of fam­ily and friends, he was proud of his large fam­ily and never met a stranger that he could not have a con­ver­sa­tion with whether it be about sports, fish­ing or his time spent in the ser­vice. Don is pre­ceded in death by his wife Betty, daugh­ter Adri­enne, sons, Scott, Earl and Ralph, par­ents Wil­liam and Elvira, sis­ter Maryanne, brother Chuck, and grand­son Wil­liam. Don sur­vived by his two sons Jay and Kelly (Pamela), seven grand­chil­dren Adam, Bubba, Kol­bie, Shana, Alexan­dra, Saman­tha and Ki­ley, seven great-grand­chil­dren, one great-great-grand­child and sis­ter Martha. Visi­ta­tion will be held on Sun­day, De­cem­ber 9, 2018 from 3-7pm at Ivers & Al­corn Fu­neral Home in At­wa­ter. Fu­neral ser­vices will be at 11:00 am on Mon­day, De­cem­ber 10, 2018 at Ivers & Al­corn Fu­neral Home in At­wa­ter with burial and mil­i­tary hon­ors to fol­low at Win­ton District Ceme­tery in Win­ton. www.Iver­sandAl­corn.com
