Miriam Goodrich Stephens, age 97, died Jan­uary 8th, 2019, at an as­sisted liv­ing fa­cil­ity in Merced, Ca. At the re­quest of the de­ceased, no ser­vices will be held. Born 16 De­cem­ber, 1921 in Porter­ville, she at­tended schools there, and grad­u­ated from San Jose State Univer­sity in 1943.

She mar­ried the late CDR Jer­rel D. Stephens, a Naval Avi­a­tor, and with him lived in thirty dif­fer­ent homes, in­clud­ing those in San Diego, Peb­ble Beach, Kansas, Mi­ami, FL, New­port, R.I., Ar­ling­ton, VA, as well as in Hawaii, New­found­land, Ice­land, Paris, France, and Stuttgart in Ger­many. In ad­di­tion, she trav­eled widely in Europe, the Mid­dle East, North Africa, Rus­sia, Siberia and China, the Caribbean, Malaysia, Aus­tralia, and New Zealand and wrote ex­ten­sively about each of these places

She was ac­tive in the Naval Of­fi­cer’s Wives Clubs, Navy Re­lief, and the Navy League. She has lived in Merced since 1968, where she joined the Art League, the Sym­phony League, the Merced County Repub­li­can Women, MOAA, and AARP. She spent seven­teen years as a Red Cross Vol­un­teer at Cas­tle AFB Hos­pi­tal.

Her chil­dren in­clude a daugh­ter, Shel­ley Clark, who died in 2007, and her son Jef­frey Stephens, his wife Cathy, and their chil­dren Chris­tine and Jeremy, all of Le Grand.
