- BY HOWARD COHEN hcohen@miamiherald.com

Need to make a pit stop while traveling on Florida’s Turnpike?

You’ll have to make do with convenience store offerings or bathroom breaks.

There will be no more food-court meals at turnpike service plazas during the coronavirus crisis.

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ order requiring restaurants within the state to close on-premise services applies to those establishments at turnpike service plazas.

On Saturday, the Florida Department of Transportation discontinued food services at all of its service plazas due to the spread of COVID-19. The food sales stoppage is effective immediately.

WHAT CAN YOU STILL GET AT PLAZAS?

Bathroom breaks and you can walk your dog.

Convenience stores will remain open. Most sell some form of quick bites on the run.

Gas. The fuel station portions remain open.

According to the Florida Department of Transportion, the marketplace stores located at Turkey Lake,

Fort Drum, Fort Pierce, Canoe Creek and West Palm Beach will remain open for now.

Convenience stores with fuel are open 24 hours a day. The Turnpike Mainline has eight service plazas about 45 miles apart.

WHAT ELSE ARE SERVICE STATIONS DOING TO KEEP YOU SAFE?

More hand sanitizer locations in convenience stores at plaza fuel stations.

Posters at entrances and restroom areas to encourage handwashing — in case you’ve yet to get the memo.

Use of new sanitizer solution specifically made to eliminate viruses.
