WEDNESDAY’S BEST PICKS

-

8 PM ^ In Their Own Words The new episode “Elon Musk” profiles an entrepreneurial maverick who grew from a bullied child told he would never amount to anything to a multimillionaire by the time he turned 31. Part of a new breed of hightech investors dubbed “thrillionaires” by the New York Times, Musk consistently has used his almost limitless wealth to turn his science-fiction dreams into reality, always with an eye open to the next big thing. Interviews include former astronaut Garrett Reisman, former NASA deputy administrator Lori Garner and Musk biographer Anna Crowley Redding. 8 PM * The Goldbergs Adam (Sean Giambrone) is devastated to learn that he has been waitlisted at NYU, where his girlfriend already has been accepted for admission — and, worse, Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) likewise is set to begin studies, after secretly applying. While Adam tries to charm the school’s dean of admissions, Erica, Geoff and Barry (Hayley Orrantia, Sam Lerner, Troy Gentile) hatch a scheme to convince Geoff’s dad, Lou (guest star Ken Lerner), that Erica was not involved in a past mishap. Jeff Garlin also stars in the new “Horse Play.”

8 PM ( DSC) Expedition Unknown In the new episode “Ghost Fort of the Civil War,” scientist Phil Torres and paranormal researcher Jessica Chobot gain unprecedented access to investigate reports of ghostly voices and apparitions in the massive Civil War stronghold of Fort Morgan in south Alabama. There’s an urgent clock on their investigation, however, as some fearsome Gulf Coast storms threaten to destroy the 200-year-old fort and the mysteries inside.

9 PM ^ NOVA An estimated 55 million Americans say they use cannabis, and that number is expected to grow as voters in more and more states push for legalization. The new episode “The Cannabis Question” explores our relationship with cannabis, uncovering what scientists have discovered about the plant’s effects on the body and brain. Though many believe cannabis is benign, even beneficial, confusion reigns as the federal government still classifies it as a Schedule 1 drug, in the same category as heroin.

9 PM $ Big Brother With much of the rest of the planet still dealing with a new variant of the coronavirus, the novelty of a group of strangers in a house cut off from the “outside world” may have resonated a bit differently for viewers, but Season 23 of this reality competition series continued to play out as usual, with its pool of 16 Houseguests reduced each week by eliminations. In tonight’s twohour finale, a jury of previously ousted players decides which of two finalists deserves the $750,000 grand prize. Julie Chen Moonves hosts. 9 PM ( HGTV) Houses With History In this new home makeover series, history buff Mike Lemieux, designer Jen MacDonald and carpenter Rich Soares team up to save centuries-old properties in and around historic Plymouth, Mass., and share stories about the origins of those homes as they do so. The series premiere, “The One on the Cranberry Bog,” finds the trio touring two historic properties, one a former inn built in the 1830s and the other a single-family residence constructed in 1735. After the restoration and renovation are complete, Jonathan Knight (“Farmhouse Fixer”) checks out the results.

9:31 PM * Home Economics Things get a little hot in the kitchen when a cashstrapped Tom (Topher Grace) considers ghostwriting a memoir for a celebrity chef in the new episode “Chorizo With Mojo Verde and Chicharron, $45.” Meanwhile, Connor (Jimmy Tatro) starts dating a politically “woke” friend of Sarah and Denise (Caitlin McGee, Sasheer Zamata), who makes a surprising impact on him.
