Syracuse ends FSU’s home win streak at 25

Cole Swider had 16 points, 10 rebounds and two big free throws in the final minute as Syracuse defeated Florida State 63-60 on Saturday in the ACC opener for both teams.

The loss snapped FSU’s 25-game homecourt winning streak in ACC play. The conference record is 26, set by Duke from 1997 to 2000.

Syracuse (5-3) led 55-44 with 5:43 left before FSU, which had shot 20% for most of the second half, got hot. The Seminoles made five-straight shots, the last a 3-pointer by Malik Osborne, to make it 61-60 with 42 seconds left. After both teams committed turnovers Syracuse had the ball with 12 seconds left. Florida State had to foul twice to force the one-andone, sending Swider to the line.

He made both attempts for a 63-60 lead, then Caleb Mills and Osborne missed three-pointers in the final 10 seconds.

Florida State led 32-24 at the break but went cold for much of the second half. Syracuse opened the second half with a 19-6 run, and by the time the Orange built a 49-42 lead with eight minutes left, Florida State was 4-for-21 shooting.

Mills led Florida State (5-3) with 16 points and Osborne added 10 points and eight rebounds. The Seminoles made 4 of 30 three-point attempts.

Justin Moore added 16 points and Eric Dixon had 12 for the short-handed Wildcats (6-2), who won their 10th straight in a series dating to 1921 between the Big Five rivals that are separated by just seven miles.

“That was a good defensive performanc­e by us,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “I was impressed.”

Jordan Hall scored 22 points for Saint Joe’s (4-4).

The Wildcats have been dealing with a non-COVID virus for more than a week. It forced several players to quarantine away from the team this week.

Villanova held Saint Joe’s to 21 of 58 shooting

(36.2%) from the field, including 7 for 31 (22.6%) from long range. The Hawks also committed 15 turnovers. Taylor Funk, who entered leading Saint Joe’s at 17.4 points per game, went scoreless, missing all six of his tries.

No. 17 UConn 88, Grambling State 59: UConn got a chance to show its depth on Saturday, playing without two injured starters who will be sidelined for the next several weeks. R.J. Cole scored 18 points and freshman Jordan Hawkins added 15 to step up and help the host Huskies rout Grambling State (3-6). Isaiah Whaley had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Akok Akok chipped in with 10 for the Huskies (8-1), who are off to the program’s best start since going 9-0 to open the 201314 season.

Mississipp­i 67, No. 18 Memphis 63: Jarkel Joyner scored 20 points and the host Rebels (6-2) converted 10 of 11 free throws in the final four minutes to defeat the Tigers (5-3).

No. 21 Auburn 86, Yale 64: K.D. Johnson scored 19 points, Jabari Smith added 17 points and seven rebounds and the host Tigers (7-1) blew past Yale (5-5).

No. 23 Wisconsin 89, Marquette 76: , Johnny Davis scored 25 points to lead four Wisconsin players in double figures as the host Badgers (7-1) downed their in-state rival Warriors (7-2).

No. 24 Michigan 72, San Diego State 58: Hunter Dickinson had 23 points and 14 rebounds, freshman Caleb Houstan scored a season-high 17 points and the host Wolverines (5-3) beat the Aztecs (5-3).

No. 25 Seton Hall 113, Nyack 67: Seton Hall had a trio come off the bench and combine for 66 points, leading the Pirates (7-1) over Division II Nyack

(2-5).
