The three most important skin products for men who want a simple, daily routine

- BY LESLIE BAUMANN, M.D. Special to the Miami Herald

Many men want a simple skincare routine that consists of only a few quick steps and doesn’t require a counter full of products.

At the bare minimum, these three skincare products can create a daily skincare routine for the no-nonsense men who want to get in and out of the bathroom in a hurry in the morning.

CLEANSER

Men and women alike should cleanse their skin two times per day: once in the morning and once in the evening before bed. The only exception would be for people with dry skin and rosacea. To avoid unnecessary redness in this case, you may be able to skip your morning cleanser. Otherwise, it is imperative that you cleanse your skin twice per day.

Do not use bar soap or an all-in-one body wash product to wash your face. These products can damage your skin barrier and worsen dryness, flaking, redness, and acne.

Instead, use an appropriate face wash for your skin type. Dry types should use a non-foaming, moisturizing cleanser, while oily types can use a foaming cleanser to remove excess oil.

MOISTURIZER OR SERUM

Depending on your skin type, a moisturizer or serum designed to treat your skin’s specific barriers to health is the second most important step in your routine. If you have dry skin that is prone to flaking or cracking, a barrier repair moisturizer may be the second step in your routine.

Other treatment products include those with acne-fighting ingredients such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, antiinflammatory ingredients like argan oil and chamomile and anti-aging ingredients such as retinoids and antioxidants.

SUNSCREEN

The final step in your quick morning routine should be sunscreen of at least SPF 15. Interestingly, one of the most common skincare products that men purchase is eye cream, though applying daily sunscreen to your face can help to drastically reduce signs of skin aging, including fine lines and wrinkles near the eyes.

BOTTOM LINE

Your skincare routine does not have to be timeconsuming or expensive in order to achieve healthy, younger-looking skin. Start with a cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen that are a match for your Baumann Skin Type to see a noticeable improvement in the tone and texture of your skin. Additional treatment products can then be added to this basic routine if you are struggling with a specific skin condition.
