For a football program that has produced legendary quarterbacks such as Joe Namath, Bart Starr and Ken Stabler, the Alabama Crimson Tide surprisingly enough has not had one win a Heisman Trophy.
But that could change with Bryce Young. At this writing, the 20-year-old sophomore from Southern California was the odds-on favorite to take home college football’s most prestigious honor.
As of late October, the first-year starter was among the nation’s leading passers, completing 187 of 267 passes (a 70 percent rate) for 2,453 yards (sixth in the nation) and 26 touchdowns (third) against only three interceptions in eight games for a QB rating of 88.5.
The performances for such an inexperienced field general have been impressive. Probably his best came in Week 4 against Southern Mississippi, when he threw for 313 yards and five touchdowns on 20-of-22 passing in the Tide’s 63-14 romp. Then there was his Week 8 effort against Tennessee, when he completed 31-of-43 passes for 371 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another two scores in ‘Bama’s 52-24 blowout of their SEC rival. Young had big shoes to fill when he replaced last year’s starter Mac Jones (who himself is now thriving as a first-year starter for the New England Patriots). If he can take home a Heisman in his first year under center, the name Bryce Young will go down as one of the greats among Alabama quarterbacks.
