Aventura, Florida - Arlene Dreyfus Furman, Aventura, FL and formerly of West Long Branch and Jersey City, NJ, died December 9th, at home surrounded by her family.

Born in Jersey City, NJ, in 1945, Arlene was raised in West New York, NJ and had a happy childhood with her older sister, parents and extended family. She graduated from Memorial High School and Jersey City State College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. Arlene started her teaching career in Fort Lee, NJ as an elementary school teacher. At her sister’s wedding, she met the groom’s cousin, Joel Furman, and they married on July 22, 1967.

The young couple moved from Jersey City, NJ to Deal, NJ before settling into their home in West Long Branch, NJ where they raised their two sons. When their children were older, Arlene returned to the teaching profession. She started her Monmouth County teaching career in Long Branch, working at the Elberon School, teaching the 2nd grade. Arlene applied for a position with Eatontown Board of Education and spent many years teaching 2nd and 4th grades and special education, before retiring in 2011. She relocated in 2015 to South Florida to be closer to her grandchild­ren.

Arlene was a former member of the Eatontown PTO, West Long Branch PTA and the Sisterhood of Temple Beth Torah.

Arlene’s greatest joys included spending time with her family, daily exercise walks with her teaching buddies, dinner parties with friends, and cooking zucchini, tomatoes, blackberri­es and other seasonal produce from the family garden.

She was predecease­d by her husband, Joel Furman, her parents, Edward & Gertrude (Alanof) Dreyfus and her husband’s parents, Dr. Sol T. & Cecilia (Berman) Furman. She is survived by her sons; Steven Furman, Aventura, FL, and Dr. Neil Furman and his wife Shlomit, North Miami Beach, FL. She is also survived by her two grandchild­ren, Jack and Mason Furman, her sister, Bryna Dreyfus Berman, Aventura, FL, and several beloved nieces, nephews, great-niece, great-nephews and cousins.
