Mills, FSU denies Syracuse late; Baylor loses 2nd straight

Caleb Mills knocked down five of six three-point shots to score 19 points and Florida State denied host Syracuse in the final minutes to take a 76-71 decision for its third straight victory on Saturday afternoon.

The teams each won on the road in the Atlantic Coast Conference series. Syracuse earned a 63-60 win at Florida State Dec. 4.

Mills hit back-to-back three-pointers, the second with just under five minutes to go, to put Florida State (10-5, 4-2) in front, 67-64. Wyatt Wilkes knocked down a three with 2:35 left to push the lead to four, 72-68, but Jesse Edwards hit the second of two free throws and Jimmy Boeheim put back an offensive rebound to get the Orange (8-9, 2-4) within one.

Syracuse forced the Seminoles into a turnover with 34 seconds left, but Boeheim’s

shot rimmed off and Florida State’s Anthony Polite chased down the rebound and fed Matthew Cleveland for a a dunk when Syracuse opted not to foul.

UF 71, South Carolina 63: Phlandrous Fleming Jr. and Kowacie Reeves scored 14 points each and the Gators beat the host Gamecocks for their first SEC win of the season.

Colin Castleton added 10 points, 10 points fewer than his average in conference play, but had a career-tying eight blocks plus seven rebounds. Florida (10-6, 1-3) avoided its its first 0-4 SEC start since 1950.

Chico Carter Jr. scored 12 points and Erik Stevenson added 10 for the Gamecocks (10-6, 1-3).

Northweste­rn 64, No. 10 Michigan St. 62: Ryan Young had 18 points and eight rebounds, helping the Wildcats (9-6, 2-4 Big Ten) hold on to upset the host Spartans (14-3, 5-1) for their first road win over a top 10 team in nearly five years.

Arkansas 65, No. 12 LSU 58: Jaylin Williams hit a tiebreakin­g three-pointer with slightly more than a minute to play to send the Razorbacks (12-5, 2-3 Southeaste­rn Conference) past the host Tigers (15-2, 3-2) for their first road win of the season.

No. 15 Iowa St. 79, No. 21 Texas 70: Gabe Kalscheur scored 22 points, including six three-pointers, as the host Cyclones (14-3, 2-3 Big 12) held on against the Longhorns (13-4, 3-2).

No. 17 Xavier 80, Creighton 73: Colby Jones scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half as the host Musketeers (13-3, 3-2 Big

Marquette 73, No. 20 Seton Hall 72: Greg Elliott made a tiebreakin­g free throw with 1.7 seconds left as the host Golden Eagles (12-6, 4-3 Big East) withstood a long second-half drought and beat the Pirates

AAA(11-5, 2-4) for their fourth straight win.
