Jorge “George” Garcia December 8, 1943 - January 27, 2022
Miami Beach, Florida - Jorge “George” Garcia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 27, 2022, at the age of 78 from gall bladder surgery complications.
George was on born December 8, 1943 in Guanabacoa, a township in eastern Havana, Cuba, to Eduardo Garcia and Josefa Felicia Jimenez. The youngest of 4 sons, he studied veterinary science at the University of Havana. A political prisoner in Cuba, he immigrated to the United States at the age of 34 with his wife and two young daughters in search of better opportunities and settled in West New York, New Jersey. He worked as a social worker for the Department of Children and Families in Jersey City, New Jersey, and in 1990 he transferred to the Florida Department of Children and Families in Miami Beach. He loved nature and time spent outdoors, and most especially the beach. Life’s simple pleasures, including exercise, swimming, fishing and travel, brought him the greatest joy. He was always exercising on the sandy beaches of Miami Beach and loved to start his mornings with a long walk or a jog after watching the sun rise. George lived his best life. A devout Catholic, his faith got him through numerous heart surgeries and multiple cancers.
George is survived by his two daughters, Dania Saavedra and her husband Diego, Galia Costello and her husband Robert, and his three grandchildren, Daniel (Danny) Gaspar Saavedra, Gabriel (Gabe) Lorie Saavedra and Emily (Emi) Danielle Costello.
George’s zest for life will be remembered with love long after his passing by his loving family and friends who will strive to honor his memory by living their lives to the fullest.
Remember George by going for a walk and enjoying nature, watch a sunrise or a sunset, or simply raise a glass of your favorite drink in his memory.
Private family services will be held. Cremation will take place at the family’s convenience and his ashes will be scattered along the shores of his beloved Miami Beach.
The family welcomes a memorial donation in his name to the American Heart Association at www.heart. org as an expression of sympathy instead of flowers.
