Some might interpret society’s new fixation on a full “booty” and more ethnic hairstyles as evidence that Black women are having a beauty moment. Others, however, argue that traditional Black features and attributes are viewed as more desirable if they’re on white women.

Born Fannie Lou Townsend on Oct. 6, 1917, in Montgomery County, Miss., Hamer began civil rights activism in 1962, earning a reputation for using hymnals and Bible quotes in her appearances. During her crusade, she endured threats, extortion and physical assault by racists, some of them police officers.
