Hurricanes rally to take slim lead in Metro division

-

For 55 minutes against the lowly New Jersey Devils on Saturday, the visiting Carolina Hurricanes were in danger of seeing their chances of winning the Metropolitan Division take a hit.

But Carolina tied the score at 2-all on thirdperiod goals by Brady Skjei and Nino Niederreiter in the final five minutes.

And then rookie Seth Jarvis scored at 1:39 of overtime off a nice assist by defenseman Tony DeAngelo, giving the Hurricanes a 3-2 victory.

The Hurricanes' third straight win left them with 110 points, which puts them alone in first in the division with three games left. The New York Rangers are second with 108 points.

“We’re going to have to play a great team in the playoffs, so I think it’s just good for the group to know when we’re down and we're not playing our best we can still find a way,” Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said.

Goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov made 17 saves for Carolina in his NHL debut.

Bruins 3, Rangers 1: David Pastrnak scored his team-leading 39th goal after missing the previous eight games with an undisclosed injury, helping host Boston win.

Taylor Hall and Trent Frederic also scored for Boston, which is jockeying for playoff seeding in the Eastern Conference. Linus Ullmark made 30 stops.

The Bruins had lost four of their previous six games.

Mika Zibanejad scored his 29th goal for New York and Igor Shesterkin made 32 saves.

Having locked up home ice in the opening round of the playoffs with a victory over the Islanders on Thursday, the Rangers saw their four-game winning streak snapped.

New York finished the road portion of its regular season with 25 victories, tied for third-most in team history.

Penguins 7, Red Wings 2: Evgeni Malkin scored two goals as visiting Pittsburgh won for the third time in four games.

Kris Letang had a goal and two assists for the Penguins. Sidney Crosby, Rickard Rakell and Chad Ruhwedel each finished with a goal and an assist.

Detroit dropped its third straight game. Jakub Vrana and Michael Rasmussen scored for the

Red Wings.

Sabres 5, Islanders 3: Tage Thompson scored his team-leading 37th goal during a three-goal surge in the second period by host Buffalo.

Jeff Skinner, with his 33rd goal of the season, stuffed in Thompson’s rebound with 7:20 left in the third period to secure the win after Buffalo nearly squandered a 4-1 third-period lead.

The Sabres, who have been eliminated from the playoffs, got their fourth straight victory, the team’s best since a 10game run in November 2018.
