Deceptive justices bring shame on Supreme Court

-

If Supreme Court Associate Justices Bret Kavanaugh and Amy Barrett could so easily betray their promises to Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski to not undermine Roe v Wade, why should anyone believe or have faith that any decision rendered by this compromised, tainted Court is not biased or indebted to its Republican masters?

If 50 years of precedent can be erased with selfrighteous legislation that bans abortions even in horrific cases of incest or rape, what else can we expect from a Court that refuses to consider the unfair psychological, familial, and financial burdens that the most vulnerable will be forced to endure?

Free speech, book banning, LGBTQ rights, same- sex marriages, fair elections, and countless other issues are under attack in Republican states, and fair game for this politically aligned Court to eventually whittle away.

Whether it be Justice Clarence Thomas refusing to recuse himself from his wife’s far-right attempt to overthrow our government, or the lies Kavanagh and Barrett told at their confirmation hearings, one thing is clear — they have little regard for the American people. Their lies, duplicity, and complicity illustrate a heavy-handed, callous application of the law.

They exemplify that the law is not blind and that the levers of power, unchecked and unscrupulously attained, will even- tually undermine the liberties of all but those who sit at the top, detached from reality and accountability.

MOTHER’S DAY

A mother is nature’s designated protector of the fruit of her womb. Throughout all of nature, from the smallest to the largest creature, a mother nourishes and fights to protect her progeny, in and outside the womb. The tiny fruit of her womb has no other advocate for its safe- ty, health and, yes, its very life.

What a sad statement of our society when a mother seeks to murder that unique fruit.

Most women today have complete control over their bodies. If a woman does not wish to become a mother, that is a decision she should make before allowing a seed to be implanted in an egg, thus creating a new human being, solely dependent on her for its life and wellbeing.

WOMEN, UNITE

English playwright William Congreve got it right in his 1697 tragedy, “The

Opinion content from syndicated sources may be trimmed from the original length to fit available space.

Mourning Bride:” “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” Scorned?

Heck, women weren’t even mentioned in the U.S. Constitution in 1787.

With the recent leak of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s draft opinion of Roe v. Wade, a clarion call is being heard far and wide across the United States. We have come a long way and we are not turning back.

Now, we must use our lawful power to protect and defend our lives and our very bodies.

We are not handmaids. Our bodies are ours, as Gloria Steinem has clearly reminded us.

On Mother’s Day, may grannies and granddaughters and moms in the middle generation unite — and fight.

We all know that our lives depend on it.

Each must find her power and use it. Fury well placed is fury well spent.

DETACHED VALUES

The Republican Party claims to stand for free speech and has long enjoyed a reputation as the party of big business. Yet, the May 6 story, “Rubio targets Citi and Amazon with bill on abortion-travel benefits,” reveals something else entirely. Republicans are having issues reconciling two tenets of their party platform.

The GOP has grown so extreme, including their beliefs on abortion, that businesses no longer want to associate with them. Republicans should recog- nize this as a major threat and move to a more moderate path. Instead, they choose to pander to a small but influential base of MAGA supporters. Sen. Marco Rubio’s bill is emblematic of this in that it seeks to punish corporations for using their right to free speech.

As 2024 GOP contenders race to the right, they have utterly abandoned their party’s traditional platform. Rubio should stop running

DESPOTIC DECREE

When women can no longer make their own choice on abortion, based on their individual and very personal circumstances, we will then have in place government-mandated pregnancy.

GOD’S HAND

Who is ultimately responsible to make the choice — the woman or the government?

Our creator put this baby inside the woman for a reason.

ABERRANT FACTS

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito twists American history to promote a partisan agenda.

According to the National Institutes of Health, “Abortion was frequently

practiced in North America during the period from 1600 to 1900” ... “In the British colonies, abortions were legal if they were performed prior to quickening,” that is, in the first trimester.

Abortion is a right not enumerated in the Constitution, and is therefore protected by the 14th Amendment because, to quote Alito, it is “deeply rooted in this nation’s history and tradition and implicit in the concept of ordered liberty.”

Radical political activism from a highly partisan Supreme Court majority now undermines confidence in the judicial system.

How many future children will suffer as the unwanted progeny of rapists, human traffickers and incest?

How many will be raised in poverty or in foster care? Will the state pay to raise them?

Of course not.
