Miami, Florida - Amster, Harvey P., age 91, passed away June, 15, 2022 in Miami, Florida. Due to COVID precautions, only immediate family attended the funeral. Originally from New York City, Harvey lived most of his life in Miami, graduating from Miami Senior High School and attending the University of Miami. He was a loving and warm person, known for his keen sense of humor, inborn knack for salesmanship, and instinct for business. He was a sharp and honorable businessman, owning a successful retail uniform chain in South Florida from 1954-1982. As the owner and manager of several commercial real estate properties, including the historical buildings at the intersection of US1 and Sunset Drive (formerly the Dorn Brothers Buildings; now Amster Properties), he remained an active member of the business community throughout the rest of his life. Harvey was an animal lover, owning many horses and dogs over the years. Family lore has it that, as a boy, he traded the few toys he owned for a ride around the block on a friend’s pony. When he was able to buy his own horses, he became an avid horseman, participating in (and winning) many 100-mile endurance rides in

Florida and North Carolina. When not riding in them, he judged them, and was eventually elected as President of the Florida Horsemen’s Association. For some time, he owned a ranch in Altoona, Florida where he and his beloved wife of 68 years, Ellen, often hosted their family and friends, providing fun-filled days with hayrides, horseback rides, horse-drawn buggy rides, and ATV drives throughout the Ocala National Forest. When the riding was done, everyone would pile into the pontoon boat to explore the many springs and lakes in Northern Florida. In his later years, he and Ellen became boaters and cruised the waters of Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys. As an elder, he took up tennis and biking and was a Coconut Grove fixture, trailing his dog behind him as he biked. Harvey was often teased for how meticulously he cared for his “gear” and it was often said that surgery could be performed in his stable, in his horse buggies, atop his ATVs, and, naturally, on the deck of his boat. He threw himself wholeheartedly into all he did and it could be said that he enjoyed his business like it was a hobby and engaged in his hobbies like they were his business. Harvey contributed to several charities and, in his later years, he and Ellen hosted several events for Lighthouse for the Blind, providing horses for the participants to ride. Harvey was a devoted husband and family man and is survived by his wife, Ellen; daughter and son-in-law, Robin Amster and Steve Olszewski; daughter, Caryn Amster; and grandchildren, David Amster-Olszewski and wife, Kirby Jones; and Siri Amster-Olszewski. He will be deeply missed.
