Miami, Florida - With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Barry Robertson Van Clief. Devoted husband, beloved father, and treasured grandfather, Barry died on October 11, 2022, from complications in a hard fought battle against Amyloidosis. He leaves behind a legacy of a loving family: his cherished wife, Jeanne; daughter Alex (Jonathan Eger) Van Clief of New York, NY; son David (Elizabeth) Van Clief of San Diego, CA; five grandchildren: Hali, Chance, Duke, Remy and June; three brothers: Daniel Good Van Clief, Jr., J. Courtlandt Van Clief and Alan S. Van Clief; and his faithful companion Stormy.

Barry was born on June 28, 1948, in Charlottesville, Virginia to Daniel Good Van Clief and Margaret Robertson Van Clief. He was raised on Nydrie Farm in rural Virginia in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. He approached his life with a quiet reverence and spent time as an artist, boat captain, sign painter, shop owner, fanatic fisherman, hunter, wood carver, fryer of fish, barbecuer of venison, and wanderer of the warm seas of Florida and the Bahamas.

Barry moved to Florida to study art at the University of Miami, met his loving wife Jeanne, pursued his art and fishing for much of his life, and, after retirement, settled into a happy routine of painting, playing the guitar, and enjoying his family. His rural upbringing and time spent at sea and in the woods gave him a deep-rooted love of nature, the outdoors, and the power that resides there. He expressed this love through his paintings. Barry took particular delight in the magic of his five grandchildren. We were all so fortunate to have his presence in our lives.

A graveside service for Barry will be held on Sunday, October 23, 2022 at 12:30 p.m. at the Van Clief Family Cemetery in Esmont, Virginia, 22937, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Amyloidosis Support Groups (https://www.amyloidosissupport.org/) or the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Multiple Myeloma and Light Chain Amyloidosis Treatment (visit https://development.miami.edu/ and search “amyloidosis”).
