MioFive 4k dashcam loaded with features

- BY GREGG ELLMAN Tribune News Service

Dashcams have come a long way from being complex with lots of wiring and testing. With the MioFive 4k front-facing dashcam from Cruise Cloud Technology Corp., you have it unpacked and have a silent witness filming in minutes.

The Sony IMX 415 sensor delivers 4K video day and night with an image resolution of 3840by-2160 at 30fps, which MioFive describes as coming as close as it gets to a human eye’s experience. Seven layers of high-quality glass are built into the lens with an F1.8 aperture and a 140degree field of view.

A 2.2-inch IPS driverfacing display has a 160degree viewing angle and is as clear as any to watch the videos. With the 4K video, license plates and street sights are always a good test for clarity, and many were too far for my glasses-adjusted eyes to read in real time. After seeing the Miofive recorded 4K video, the plates and signs can not only be seen, but there’s documented evidence.

Recordings are stored in the internal 64GB, with a reading and writing speed of 100MB/s. The MioFive loop records override older recordings. But when a specific file needs to be saved, it can be locked to prevent it from being overwritten. The MioFive has built-in 5Ghz Wi-Fi for downloading or viewing dashcam files on the MioFive app. The app is straightforward, with a user-friendly dashboard for settings, trip reports and viewing.

The MioFive mount attaches to a windshield with the included doublesided 3M adhesive tape. It measures 4.57-by-2.95by-2.05 inches, which allows it to mount nicely behind the rear view mirror. That’s not a requirement, but it does get it out of the way and doesn’t block any of the driver’s views.

While recording, the built-in GPS keeps the exact location, including day, time and your vehicle’s speed. It’s built to work in temperatures ranging from 14 degrees Fahrenheit to 133 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Go Assist feature was alarming initially, but it’s a handy feature for every driver who is slow to the gas at a red light turning green. It speaks out, telling you it’s time to hit the gas and move on once the car in front of you moves. Other features include 24-hour parking monitoring with time-lapse recordings at 1fps for eight, 16 or 24 hours.

Power comes from connecting it to the car’s cigarette lighter with the included hardware, or you can purchase a hardwired connection kit to tap directly into the car’s fuse box. And for backup, there’s an internal 500mAh battery, which will help for a short time if the vehicle loses power. Cost: $149.99 www.miofive.com
