The Miami Herald earned three top-10 finishes and an honorable mention in the top division of the Associated Press Sports Editors contest, as decided at its judging convention in February.

The categories in which the Herald received top-10 honors: Event coverage for its handling of the breaking news of Brian Flores’ lawsuit against the Miami Dolphins and NFL, special print section and feature photography. The Herald also received honorable mention for print portfolio. The Miami Herald’s submissions were in Division A, which consists of the largest publications in the country.

The event coverage package consisted of four stories and a podcast all published within a 24hour period of the news breaking that Flores filed a 58-page lawsuit alleging racial discrimination and that the Dolphins fired him for his reluctance to tank during the 2019 season, his first of three seasons as the Dolphins head coach.

The package included the initial breaking news story by Daniel Oyefusi and David Wilson, a column from Greg Cote asserting that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross must sell the team if the lawsuit proved true, a sidebar from Barry Jackson with lawyers saying Flores’ claims against Ross could lead to a criminal investigation and Dolphins punishment, a sidebar from Jordan McPherson with a game-by-game breakdown of the Dolphins’ 2019 season (the season in question in regards to tanking) and a podcast from Oyefusi and Wilson diving into the lawsuit and the potential ramifications.

Veteran photographer Al Diaz also earned a top-10 placement for feature photography.

The Herald’s football preview section — which includes the NFL, college football and high schools — earned top-10 honors for special sections.

The print portfolio consisted of five print editions — two dailies (one from a mandatory week and one from any day of the year), two Sunday or weekend editions (one from a mandatory week and one from any day of the year) and a fifth that could be either a daily or a Sunday/weekend edition.
