Tigers beat Cardinals with small-ball

Akil Baddoo hit the winning RBI double in the 10th inning to lift the Detroit Tigers over the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 on Saturday.

Spencer Torkelson had two RBI singles for the visiting Tigers, who won their fifth straight game.

Detroit tied the game 5-5 in the seventh inning when Riley Greene hit a single, Javier Baez walked and Torkelson hit another RBI single.

Baddoo drove in designated runner Jonathan Schoop from second in the top of the 10th, and Jose Cisnero retired the Cardinals on a fielder’s choice, a popout and a groundout.

Tigers starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull allowed five runs on seven hits in 4 2⁄3 innings. He struck out six and walked one.

Cisnero (2-0), the fifth Tigers pitcher, worked the final 1 2⁄3 innings to earn the victory.

Dylan Carlson hit a three-run homer and Nolan Arenado hit a two-run blast for the Cardinals, who lost their eighth straight game.

Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright made his first start of the season after missing five weeks with a groin muscle strain. He allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings. Wainwright struck out five and walked none.

Reliever Giovanny Gallegos (1-2), the fifth Cardinals pitcher, took the loss.

Astros: Houston righthande­r Luis Garcia will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the season, the team announced Friday night. A date for the surgery has not been set. Garcia exited Monday night’s game after just eight pitches. The 26-year-old finished second in American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2021, going 11-8 with a 3.48 ERA.

Red Sox-Rangers trade: Boston acquired right-hander Zack Littell from Texas on Friday for cash considerat­ions, MLB.com reported. Littell was with the Rangers’ Triple-A affiliate in Round Rock and was 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in eight appearance­s. Littell, 27, hasn’t pitched in the majors yet this season despite making 145 big-league appearance­s (four starts) over five seasons with Minnesota and San Francisco.
